Ooo-Ooo-Ooo!!! :)

I was standing in my kitchen making a coffee, when i saw BG chatting up and feeding this little female....

mum1.jpg

(this is an old picture taken at the end of her 2 clutches - she is rested now :hap: )

She is half his size and not who i would put with him. But perhaps he IS interested in breeding!!!

Daz, you mentioned a hen that would suit him would be a:

"I would pair to a blue normal, opaline or spangle hen. The hen would have to have good clean wing definition good mask and good shoulders. Very stocky."

Can i get an example of what she would need to look like, please? I understand the colouring you recomend. It's the "wing definition and good mask" etc that I am unsure about.

thanks

As a general rule of pairing Show types Liv i beleive the cock can't be a considerable amount larger than the hen or the pairing won't work form my knowledge?

Size in pairing budgies doesnt seem to matter Libby. I have had a male three times the size of the hen and still they managed and had babies.

thanks Libby,

I wouldn't let THEM pair up :hap: . She is the smallest hen i have hehe. i really want some top quality chicks from him. At the moment he is in a colony avairy so he is able to socialise with any female he pleases. This is just the first real flirting i have ever seen him do. :) I always thought he was too old for all these young hens. But if what the others are saying and he is young enough to breed, then i want to buy him a show quality hen and pair them seperatly in my smaller avairy.

When looking for your show quality hen....Look for size and shape before colour. Long mask, plenty of feather, broad shoulders, eye position from the side view being closer to the front than the back ...means good backskull. Long and straight. No crossed wings. Good spots and markings. Not too old a hen.....preferably not past 2 years.

Thanks Kaz,

I will probably have to get in contact with my local budgie club **GULP**

Will i have to join? or will i be able to buy a hen without being a member???? (i'm shy ^_^B) )

To be honest Liv...joining a proper budgie club would be one of the best decisions you ever made. Your choice in budgies will change, your standards will go up, your access to better birds will increase and you will wonder why you did not do it YEARS AGO :D

This ring issue fascinates me. ANBC doesn't allow the year in full. eg 08 there is a symble instead of the first number

In 2006 they used an arrow instead of 06 it's >6. This year it's a X so instead of 08 it's X8.

They do this to stop people cheating and having false rings made before time.

Kaz check your rings they should be the same.

I think these are private rings.

We take of 06 rings and we write them that way eg PR-235-06 or PR-06-235 or with out the - but that is not whats on the ring.

As yours has 94 I believe that it's not a proper ring. 1994 was a Blue ring not gold.

Too many questions in my mind on that ring being correct.. But the bird is not that old. I agree with Kaz. 2 to 3 years old .

Thats great news!!! :)

Thanks Guys!! I didnt realise that the rings were so important. Shame he wasn't rung propperly.

I really hope i can breed from him. I am now on another hen search.

I will let you know when i find one and see what you think of her

You can use him to a Spangle, Normal, Opaline.

My two cents , Kas has got it , the bird has been rung forwhatever reason with an old ring , and he is no way 14 years old , more like 4 tops.

:)

Thanks Daz. I will keep my eyes peeled. I think my first preference would be an opaline - wish me luck.

p.s. I'm a Wells too :) - I dont think we are related though. My family crest is different to yours - mine has the lion with one tail and a lamp post.

I am really excited about him being young - i was so dissapointed when i saw the year on the ring :) . I wonder if he was for sale because the owner though he was old and no good for breeding - hehe lucky me :)

Liv, what has been the out come? Has he bred for you?

Liv, what has been the out come? Has he bred for you?

Hey Daz,

The out come has given nothing but a whole lot of nothing

Here is BG from a week or so ago

bg3.jpg

He is now an inside budgie as the cold was making him sick. He was sick for a while with respiratory infections and the vets even told me he was going to die of liver failure and lung damage :(

He has since gotten better and is enjoying life out of the cold with my inside (tame) budgies.

I did not receive any email back regarding the leg rings... and then I forgot to pursue it further ;)

I don't think he has fathered any chicks. The only possible chick is Cookie (front), where his sister, Latte, to his left, is the baby of another male (Barney) - so in all reality the odds of Cookie being BG's baby would be slim.

slc2.jpg

I am tempted to put BG in a cabinet (in the house) with a hen so i can keep a close eye on them and also keep him in the warmth which he thrives in.

I have also considered AI with him but i don't have an infertile cock and i don't know where to find one either

ps. It's funny, as i have just been going though all my old topics and relinking my moved photos - i had planned to update on this topic :D
