Posted February 3, 200817 yr When i let my birds out today, 3 flew off and one hit the floor. Upon close inspection i see that bluey is missing the longer feathers on one of her wings, so cannot fly. I found four long feathers at the bottom of the cage, so it must have happened whilst in there. i have no idea what happened to her. Does anyone have any ideas and will she be okay? I have had birds loose all filghts on one wing before , it could be she is moulting or she could have a virus , I would seperate her from the others and keep an eye on her , make sure she is eating and drinking and see how she goes if she starts to fluff up and become lathargic the seek some vet help .
February 3, 200817 yr Was there any blood around the nib of the lost feathers? They could have been pulled out in a squabble or an accident that you didnt see.
February 3, 200817 yr Author 3 feathhers were clean, one has a reddish brown colour on the end that could be blood. I will seperate her and add a picture soon Picture as promised Edited February 3, 200817 yr by suzii
February 3, 200817 yr 3 feathhers were clean, one has a reddish brown colour on the end that could be blood. I will seperate her and add a picture soon Picture as promised Thanks for the picture ,It does look similar to the birds I had , Keep her seperated and clean everything ,if my suspitions are right its a virus but Im "NOT" a Vet so I think it would be best to get a check up at your vet. In the mean time Keep everything clean and always feed and clean her cage last so if it is a virus you wont spread it. P.s dont panic if she is eating and drinking she will be fine. Someone else may have a different idea?
February 3, 200817 yr All other flights and tail are intact. Check the bird more closely and look for signs of new flight feathers growing in. Might be regrowth due to moult of may have had some feathers pulled by another bird or caught in something. If a feather issue I would expect to see other wing feathers missing and tail too. February 3, 200817 yr about 4 months ago one of my budgies in the aviary lost his flight feathers on one wing, all his other feathers were fine so i think he just had an accident. His feathers are growing back now and he is still healthy.
February 4, 200817 yr Author Thankyou everyone. She seems to be doing fine otherwise, just a bit miffed at being seperated from the other. She does not appear to be sick, heaps of energy. How long will i need to keep her away from the others.
February 4, 200817 yr I do not think she has any feather issues that are contagious. Put her back with the others
February 9, 200817 yr Author She is back in with the others now. How long do you think until she will be able to fly again?
February 26, 200817 yr Author Just to let you all know, Bluey's feathers are back. She did a couple of laps around the lounge tonight. I enjoyed her time running around on the floor though. With the others leaving her behind, we spent more time one on one. It was great and i will miss it Thanks to everyone
