Clipping Blinkie :(

I really don't want to do it, but i think i'm going to have to clip Blinkie's wings. :) Lately he's been so naughty when it comes time to go in his cage, it can take up to an hour past the time i put everyone else away for me to finally trick Blinkie in his cage. I'm not sure what else i can do but clip his wings to slow him down.

All my tricks that usually work (e.g. mirror, holding Ozzie hostage, etc) to get him to go away don't work well anymore, especially if i have them out during the day, he's better behaved if i'm putting him away late at night. Any suggestions before i clip my precious boy. I'll feel like an absolute monster doing it, but i can't be rounding him up for so long, especially not once i start school.

Don't feel too bad Bea, you have to do what you think is best for everyone. I went through the same thing before I decided to get my budgie's clipped, keeping them safe was top priority, thus I got them clipped.

I'm sure Blinkie will adjust without any major hiccups, I've found that they still manage to stick their little beaks into everything and climb up on shelves and such, it just takes them a bit longer than it normally would and a few attempts to find the easiest route!

Also, having a few lengths of rope for them to climb up onto benches/shelves/chairs or whatever other high place they like to perch on comes in handy aswell.

I won't clip him to the point of not being able to get short distances. I just feel awful cause he's my spoilt little baby who never gets in trouble. :) I keep the tiels partially clipped, and have clipped Fizzy and Ozzie in the past with no guilt. Blinkie has just squirmed into his own little place in my heart. :D

it is a hard decision to make but i believe you will make the decision that seems right for you and Blinkie. i have my 2 house budgies wings clipped because i have a open plan house with cathredral ceilings and after a couple of accidents i decided to keep my birds safe i needed to clip their wings. i had one incident of one of my budgies fallen behind my fridge and i was lucky my husband was home from work to move the fridge so we could reach him. sometimes one of my did not want to go back to his cage and would sit up on our rafters and i would have to go and get the ladder to get him down but it would freak him out and i found he was getting scared of me and this big ladder so i got their wings clipped and i do not regret it.They are happy and i feel like i can keep them safer this way.

Well i just gritted my teeth and did the job i've been meaning to do for a week. My sweetie is clipped. Four flights off each side and you would think i chopped his wings off the way he's going. :) Ozzie was like the last time i clipped him though, and the next day he'd got used to the feeling and could fly short distances easily. I have to say i do enjoy Blinkie having to behave, it's quite a nice change, hehe. :D He's going to absolutely hate it when i let everyone out and they're flying all over the room and he can't join in. ;) He's adjusting to not being able to spring from any perch to any perch in his cage too, he keeps aiming too far/high and falling to the ground, silly boy.

Would you believe when he was playing chasies with me when it was cage time this afternoon, he flew to dads shoulder and yelled "STINKY BLINKIE"!! Yup, that sums up his behaviour lately. Hopefully this will knock him down a peg or two.

I think it sounds like a good decision if he's being that much of a pain, perhaps only clip 2-3 feathers on each wing? he'll be able to fly still, just not as fast nor high :)

I did 4 figuring that he's a strong flier and 3 wouldn't be enough. I'll see if i was right about that once he's gotten over the horror of not having his sexy flight feathers. I know my little Fizzy can fly FULLY clipped, little rat.

Clipping I know is difficult I hated doing it too. When Merlin got clipped right after Pretty died it did give him quite the attitude adjustment.

Poor Blinkie, but it sounds like it was needed...to make it eaiser to catch him, and to bring him down a rung or two!!! Naughty little bugger  I'm sure he still loves you and know he has a special place in your heart.

I bet it is because of all the other birds too making him very naughty. Remember how naughty Pretty would get and you know before I had a chance to give him an attitude adjustment he passed away .

:ygbudgie: One of my friends clips her female budgie wings every once in a bit when she gets obnoxious, has never had to clip her male, he is a sweetie! And if I didn't clip my lovebird Phoebe's wings, I shudder to think what she could get into, she scales furniture and draperies as it is........ :hap:

Very true phoebe, Love birds are excellent climbers/flyers even whilst clipped... My love birds get a few feathers clipped because they're in a reasonbly sized outdoor aviary but have every chance when we go in there to shoot out the door... Since it's not overly deep they have no trouble getting around... 4 of the 5 can still fly even!! and that's when clipped! :hap: (the other one never learnt how to fly from a bub)
