Weird Looking Feathers....

Featured Replies

Arrrr Papovavirus (BFD).

Now they are calling it Polyoma. Well there ya go I've learnt something! French moult was once thought to be one or both strains of virus the double dose normally killed the bird pretty much straight off, the single dose virus left you with a runner. Is this latest polyoma version definitely it?

Well I've been back to my vet and he talked me through all the tests and results and I'm happy with his advice. It is not beak and feather disease, I've seen this first hand in a corrella I had a few years ago, both the vet and I are sure Goldie does not have it, her feathers are completely healthy looking just longer and I guess you could say wavy, like she's had a body wave! There is no retardation of the feather shaft itself. He said it would be genetic as she can fly and has all tail and flight feathers intact, he said if it was french moult she would have shown signs of flightlessness and loss of flight and tail feathers when I got her and as I've said she looked normal he said the only reason he'd assume she's ever had anything wrong with her at all, ie a virus or illness of some sort when she was a baby is that she has what he thinks is stress marks on her feathers but he said this alone would not cause her feathers to wave or fluff like they have. She is a larger budgerigar than Mary and no they did not come from the same breeder, so I have no concerns at all with Mary. I'm uploading the photo's now to photo bucket but as I have dial up it may take a while so please bear with me. I'm sorry I've been a pain but I thank you for all your helpful advice. I'll post the photo's as soon as they're done.

Whilst on dialup i've found it's easier to copy them to paint, crop what you want in the picture, save it and then upload it to Photobucket :)

So is it okay for me to sigh a breath of relief and to believe it's a genetic disorder and not something more sinister or am I jumping the gun? Oh I am glad that Goldie is a girl, you see I have 3 son's and all the other animals are also male so I need another girl in the house so this is great!!! Also is it possible for someone to tell me what sort of colouring she is?

She is very pretty. Seems to be an opaline spangle....AND most likely due to her pale green colouring ....she is a cinnamon green opaline spangle. As we cannot see her flight feathers for spangle markings, and she has the opaline spangle markings on the wing butts, and the pale green colouring that a cinnamon green spangle would have...I call her ( definitely HER ) a cinnamon opaline spangle :)

Thanks for that Kaz, it's nice to put a name to the face so to speak! Thanks to everyone who has helped with Goldies issues, it's been a fantastic help. I'll have to post some pics of my little Mary, a tufted budgie but I'll do that another day in a different topic. Thanks again for all the help.
