i am wanting to put some potted plants in the aviary so i am wondering what would be the best plants to get for the budgies.my budgies like to walk around the bottom of the aviary picking at the seed that is on the ground even though there is heaps in the feeder so i was wanting to put other things in the bottom of the aviary for them to play in and eat.

Plant some budgie seeds and wait till they grow a bit. Budgies will destroy plants in no time, so you will need quite a few potted seed plants and keep rotating them in and out of the aviary. Out for recovery time or replanting.

would i use the same seed that i feed them with to plant in pots or do i have to buy special seeds.

You will need to check what plants you put in some are deadly to budgies. There is a list of "safe" plants. I tend to stick with Australian natives as this is what they would eat in the wild. Bottle brush & eucalyptus is great & is widely available, My street is full of bottlebrush & I just trim the branches evry few days, give it a wash with water & put it in the avairy, The birds love it.

Also if your budgies will try to nest in the pots if no nest boxes are available.

i have no nestbox in the aviary but if i rotate them often like kaz recommended then hopefully they will not have time to nest in them.i have bottlebrushes in my yard but they do not seem to like them.

Put a circle of aviary mesh on top of the pots.

Deb I use Hibuscus for exactly that reason , they are in pots , I put one plant in the avairy , the birds destroy it in an hour , remove the plant and cut it back , water well and it will grow back . Alternate between three or four plants , I use the hibuscus because it is very hardy and can take the regular cutting back.
