Posted January 29, 200817 yr Hi All, Just thought I should pass on the importance of getting quick vet care for our little friends that aren't feeling well. I went to let my budgies Baby and Sunny out for their morning fly around and noticed that Baby was not looking well - pooy bum, fluffed out and lethargic. I phoned the avian vet straight away and took her in, it turns out she has trichomoniasis and it took them a couple of days to work out what was wrong with her because she wasn't vomiting. I have had her for about 12 months and did the quarantine thing and vet check when I got her ( just as well because she had Mega!), but the vet reckons she has probably had the trich since I got her as well and for some reason it has decided to rear it's ugly head now. So she and Sunny are still at the vets a week later, Sunny appears fine, but Baby is still battling. She had good days and bad. It is still a wait and see game Jay
January 30, 200817 yr Sorry to hear the bad news Jay! i hope she pulls through well with the proper care required!
January 30, 200817 yr I had this go through my aviary last year, i had to treat everyone and i lost one girl to it. It's a good thing you caught it early so you can start treating them. Edited January 30, 200817 yr by Bea

January 30, 200817 yr Author Hi Spoke to the Vet last night. Still having problems with Baby. She is now experiencing weakness in her legs. The Vet is wondering if the Trich has become systemic and is affecting her kidneys. She is trying to eat seed and appears a bit brighter, but she is having trouble perching and is spending her time on the bottom of the cage. Sunny is fine except he is getting a bit distressed with trying to feed Baby and gee her along. If Baby doesn't make a dramatic improvement in the next couple of days, I think I will be getting the quality of life talk from the Vet! :yellowhead:
January 31, 200817 yr Oh... I'm so sorry for your news. Poor Baby. I hope she pulls through. I've had the quality of life talk with many vets, and It's always hard. I do however, believe you know what is the best thing to do for your animals, even when it can be very painfull for you to cope with. I had to make the hard decision late last year with one of my budgies. Mort, who was the Mum of my two clutches, was unwell. Her cere had changed from brown to blue, she wasn't eating etc... After an exam and some tests it was found it was most likey an ovarian tumour. I had the option of doing more extensive tests, but after a long consultation, we decided that the extra stress would not be worth it and the best decision for her was to go to sleep. It was very hard, but in the end, she was in peace and could be laid to rest with her 'hubby'. I have all my fingers and toes crossed for baby, and I wish you luck in what ever may happen ((((HUGS))))) of strength to you xxx
January 31, 200817 yr Oh no I'm so sorry about the news. (By coincidence, I just learnt how to diagnose trichmoniasis today.) I really hope she turns around and shows some improvement. *hugs*
January 31, 200817 yr Author Hi Well the inevitable happened and I received a phone call from the Vet telling me Baby was now having seizures, and he asked if he could euthanise. Of course I said yes. I miss her dreadfully but she wasn't getting any better and it was inhumane to keep her going. I wish the little buggers would let you know they are sick before they get really bad, but I understand why they don't. On a brighter note Sunny has finished his course of medication and appears to be fine. I am going to pick him up soon. Fingers crossed he will stays well! Thanks to everyone for their well wishes. Jay
January 31, 200817 yr I'm So sorry for your loss. - She is in peace now and no longer suffering :angel1: Great to hear Sunny is well
February 1, 200817 yr  I'm so sorry for baby's passing. She is now in peace :angel1: Best of luck and love to you and Sunny! I agree about them being sick. If only they didn't leave it so late more of them might make it... I do however understand why they do it, as they would be attacked in the wild if they show signs of weakness.
February 2, 200817 yr Oh no, I'm so sorry for your loss, atleast Baby is no longer in any pain. All the best to you and Sunny.
