Posted January 29, 200817 yr This is our current aviary, complete with a lovely surround of very dry and very reactive Adelaide plains Biscay clay soil. I am going out this afternoon to buy a LARGE amount of gypsum to fill in the cracks before we end up with tourists mixing us up with the Grand Canyon tour. This one came for $70 about years ago and we have it resting on a floor of pavers. We are going to get to and make an 'external' safety entrance [ after all these years without one!] now that I have read here of a cheap way to do it! Here is the un-used garden shed we are planning on converting this year into a secong aviary, mainly for the influx of Cockatiels we are expecting [7 new + our 'Chook']. Good thing is that the floor is totally concreted. It WILL be getting a coat of paint to the outside as well. Hmmm...may just get Robert to paint the other one to match!
January 29, 200817 yr Your aviary looks a little solitary standing out in the middle of the yard. I would be inclined to let it "grow" back into the shade. A few posts some more mesh and create your safety door between the existing area and the new area back in the shade. Also how far away is the shed in relation to the aviary now ? Maybe do some joining up and enlargements upon what you have. Wouldn't take much.
January 29, 200817 yr Hi Julie, I'm an Adaliaidian too I think we are few and far between on here (Laughing out loud). Love the size of your aviary. I would agree with Kaz that it must get hot in our weather. Dose that tree provide any shade? My birds are fully shaded (with our pergola) and they still sit on the ground panting in the hot weather... RAIN!!! PLEASE RAIN!!!!!! What a great idea to convert your shed!! good luck with that, cant wait to hear about your plans

The existing aviary is in the far left corner of the yard and the new project is in the far right corner...a million miles apart. We have it not too close to the backside fence corner as there is an orange tree on its left as well as an apricot tree and we have just last week planted Calistemons in the back left corner and back right side of the aviary. This is the distance between the 2 areas... We'll have to look into your suggestion a bit but I think it's gonna be a bit more $$$ than we have at this stage to link the 2 of them since they're so far apart. But one never says "never". Julie
January 29, 200817 yr I would reslab the area over nearer your shed and move your aviary closer to the shed with maybe another 10 feet or so gap creating another aviary section between the two or enlarging the existing. Its really easy then to create a safety door between.
January 29, 200817 yr Author Liv: I'm an Adaliaidian too I think we are few and far between on here (Laughing out loud). Just up the road from us here in Elizabeth Downs - almost neighbours! The Apricot gives them side on shade as well as the neighbours huge trees on left and right. We also have a huge tablecloth that we roll up and down dependent on the heat. We have water going over it on really hot days and go in and mist them as needed as well as their ducking into baths. Been contemplating in making a shade cloth awning that can come down from the top of the front of the cage, which is west facing, and have it able to be tethred on an angle to the ground, thus letting airf low around it still. Not had any problems with how it is to date so God must be looking after us all. It's going to be enough noise over that new side of the yard for our guests who sleep in the room just near the garden shed. Our neighbour has canaries and finches alongside our fence so we want the guests to be able to get some sleep. Otherwise a good idea. Edited February 2, 200817 yr by Daz
January 29, 200817 yr Hehe love the grand canyon comment, it sure does look rather dry were you're!!!!! I don't have much advice for what to do with your aviary as it comes down to what you can and can't do and can and can't afford, although i think some shade under a tree which can be wet down would be nice for them, but it all depends on what can be done
January 29, 200817 yr Your plans sound great! Good luck with whatever you end up doing!!! Can't wait for more updates as the project gets under way!
