Breeding Early 2008.... With Updates

Another update - all the youngsters are feathering up well.

You know they are all growing up when Mum starts sleeping outside the nest box. This is the time I need to keep a careful eye on Mum's to ensure they are not looking for a second round of breeding.

We are having quite a bit of rain here, and the little ones, although they are not exposed to the rain, I am sure, do nto fully understand what all the endless chatter is about in the aviary so late into the night.

After speaking with Deb, I took some new pics so she could see which birds are going to end up with her. Funny as everytime i tried to take a picture of the 2nd eldest chick, the yf type 1 cinnamon chick, she would start rubbing her head on the perch.

So from the nest of Sebby and Cheese, the first 4.

Thanks for the photos, they are beautiful birds. Tralia and Nibbler's babies are looking good.

Most welcome deb.

The little ones of Tralia/Nibbler and Hugo/Angel are larger than the pairing of Sebby and Cheese. It is like has been said on here many times. A lot of recessive pieds are smaller. I would love to see a photo of a larger recessive pied - any showtypes? Nibbler and Hugo are not show size birds, but they are show types, so the babies are getting the size from them.

Funny as I said I would not put any in breeding boxes again until November/December, but already I am planning. Damn it, be strong!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dave they are gorgeous and I agree I would rather them go to a good home with an aviary (nothing wrong with that) then sit in a pet shops and then gosh who knows what happens. Congrats on your success.

I would love to take a lot of credit, but the birds do all the hard work. They are very cute though.

I am still sad for those that did not make it. Milly and Humphrey's lost 4 and the the youngest of Tralia and Nibbler. Depite the happiness of the survivors, those sad thoughts remain.

that is what makes you a compassionate & wonderful person remembering the ones lost :(

They're looking great. I know what you mean about losses. Any loss is hard, regardless of how many birds you own and how young/old they are... I do however belive everything happens for a reason, and the ones that didn't make it weren't mean to. NOT that that makes it any eaiser to deal with or move on from. :(

Seems that the traveller has been leading me astray. I checked on the birds this morning, she she was out, hopping around. When she saw me, she flew up to the perch and hopped back in the nest box. Sneaky.

Mums are going to be removed over the next few days to a seperate cage to give them the chance to build up their strength before they return to the aviary, much like what happened with Sebby.

New pics to come soon, especially of Angel and Hugo's brood ( as they were missed last time) and of course the Traveller, fledged.

It sounds like the Traveller is very attached to her nestbox and is trying to make sure you do not know she has fledged, i hope things go well with moving the mums

okay, so i came home and the traveller is fluttering around the cage like she owns the world. if she was a boy, I might call her Atlas, as she is connected, or has a bit of everywhere connected to her. Since she is a girl, I can't call her traveller, journeyman or atlas, so I am thinking I might call her Geo, short for Geography.

I looked at the floor of Tralia and nibblers nest box, and saw that the nest box had been cleaned out a little bit. Seems that Tralia had done some spring cleaning. I chased her out of the nestbox to catch her and remove her to a seperate cage. Seems I was too late and she had laid an egg. This was not going to happen, so the egg was disposed of and Tralia was moved to a seperate cage.

Angel is the next one I need to check on, and i will in the morning. New pics to come tomorrow.

Deb, birds to be delivered sometime this coming week, once i work out my schedule.

Any time the coming week will be fine with me Dave, my husband and kids are home on holidays.

I do not really like the name Gypsy Kaz, maybe because the whole trustworthy, thievery type rep that is associated. I am not saying it is true, just the stereotype.

I really like Geo, and it works with the seafoam green colour she is.

Anyway, here are some pics of her. She now spends a lot more time out with Adopted Dad Hugo.

I have to take my parents dog to the vet now, but I will post more pics when I get back. lots of pics of your little ones Deb, plus the difference in colour of the youngest one to grow up in Sebby and cheese's box, thus why he remains with me.

More pics to come this afternoon, maybe even this morning. We will see!!

Note the difference in the colours here. Cheese and 2 of the pieds have sky blue patches, however the little one, who I am keeping, has a darker blue, possibly cobalt?

please do not use short cuts, they are not aloud to be used on this forum. since this is an international forum some members do not understand the shortcuts. thank you for understanding.

I love the name Gypsy, but i will never use that name again as i have noticed a trend with pets called Gypsy not living very long. I knew of 5 different Gypsy's, all different types of animal and owned by 5 different people. I feel the name is jinxed :D

Geo... cute name with soooo much meaning! Great choice.

I like Geo too... Reminds me of the matrix... a female version of Neo. :D

Never looked at it like Jimmy.

Everything inthe matrix was a bright green and black - Geo is a bit like that.

Neo was special, overcoming great odds - Geo has done that all her life, layed here, born there, raised elsewhere.

I like that

I have taken some more shots, and I am blown away by the beautiful youngsters that have been produced here.

Here is Nibbler, getting more greens as he is now a single parent.

nibbler_spinach.jpg

Tralia as you can see has been removed to her own cage to build up some strength.

Here are their young.

The eldest is a cinnamon winged cobalt spangle

tn_eldest_1-1.jpg

tn_eldest_2.jpg

The 2nd is a yellow faced type 1 cobalt blue normal.

tn_2nd_3rd.jpg

The 3rd is a yellow faced type 2 cobalt blue spangle.

tn_group2.jpg

The 4th could be a cinnamon winged (may not be) cobalt blue spangle.

They are all coming along well.

Angel and Hugo reared Geo, who we see a few posts above. They have 3 little ones of their own. They are here. The first is a double factor violet dominant pied (hopefully a boy), the 2nd is another violet Double factor dominant pied and the 3rd is Gabrielle. It was thought that she would die as she was so Pale, called Pale Ale at the beginning. Look at her now. I would say the is an Opaline, mauve, Double Factor Dominant pied (maybe single factor actually, not sure). She looks amazing, and she is now almost the same size as her brother and sister.

They all look amazing.

It also clears up a few things. Angel is an Albino, however her parents must have been an Albino and a mauve dominant pied. Hugo is a double factor dominant pied who carries the opaline gene. Tralia is a cinnamon winged yellow faced type 2 cobalt blue and nibbler is carrying the cinnamon gene (nibbler's mother is a cinnamon wing). Sebby is a Fallow that is split to recessive pied. All these things make sense now i have seen their offspring.
