My Family's First Budgie

Hello!

My children and I have a new budgie! We brought him home two days ago, and I confess that we got him from our local pet shop  . The children have named "it" Sunny. Sunny is a wonderful, friendly bird, who will already perch on our hands. So far the bird is very quiet--is this normal?

I must say, we are having so much fun watching Sunny! We're not sure, though, whether we have a boy or a girl. I read about how to tell the difference, but it seems tricky unless you are experienced, which I am not. Would any of you mind giving me your opinion? Also, what type of budgie do we have? Thank you, so much for this terrific forum.

Kind regards,

Susan

You seem to have a lovely recessive pied budgie. Can you read the codes on his/her legring at all ? A clear plain picture of the cere when he or she is out of cage will help with male/female ID.

All sounds good so far. Your budgie looks healthy too

Cheers kaz

Hi and welcome to the forum, be sure to check out the FAQ's they're chock full of very useful info.

I'm still learning, though I'm going to take a whack at it and say your little Sunny is a recessive pied.

 Welcome to BBC, may you enjoy the forum and your new family member. He/she is very pretty and I am leaning towards a male but I am hopeless at these things. Do read our FAQ section as it will answer a lot of your questions I am sure. Once again, welcome!!! ^_^

Looks like a hen to me, but recessive pieds always get me :D Congrats on your new bub!

Thank you all for the warm welcome, and for the help in identifying Sunny as a recessive pied :D . Here are a couple more photos of Sunny outside of his/her cage. In the first one you can see some of the numbers on the legring. I hope it is a clear enough picture of the cere to be able to tell if Sunny is male or female.

Many thanks!

Susan

Hello and welcome to you all. Sunnie is a sweetie! And yes, it is very normal for her to be quiet as she's probably a little stressed and adjusting to her new surroundings.

Sunny's a girl! :D Oh wonderful--my daughters are thrilled! Thank you all for your replies. (Oh, and Maesie, I really like the quote in your signature on education. We are a homeschooling family, and William Feather's words sum up our philosophy quite well.)

Kind regards,

Susan

Thanks Susan, I've always liked it! Homeschooling? Have you always done that? Can I ask what made you decide to do it. Sounds like it would be interesting and I'm guessing it works well for you all. Congrats on Sunnie the 'girl' too :(Laughing out loud):
