These pictures don't do his beautiful colour justice - he is a spectacular deep violet!!!!

Am I Right in thinking he is an opaline?

He is not very impressed with his quarantine cage.... and I was just wondering if I have to keep him in it for a full 30 days, or can i put him with rest of my flock early if he is fit?

Also, will i be able to get Opaline yellow faced violet chicks from him??? :( What hen will i need to get???

thanks, liv

Opaline violet YES...a pretty boy :) But the red cloth behind the cage didnt help when you took the photo. To get YF violets you need a YF hen who carries violet as well....maybe a YF sky violet hen. :(

Thanks KAZ,

How will i know if she caries the gene???

I did a bird shop crawl today.... :)

i think i visited everyone in the north of Adelaide (about 5 in total )

I was looking for a yellowfaced opaline - found NOTHING....

Know where i can get one??????

Oh and how dark should the yellow face be???

YF yes...not necessarily opaline as he is already. Any blue series YF hen will do. You can tell when they carry violet as they have a violet hue around their neckline area....just a violet sheen to the feathers there. Depth of yellow unimportant really.

Thanks,

thats great to know...

I dont remember seeing any yellow faced hens that were of decent size today.

There is, however, a juvenile hen in my local store... she is a great size, she is a sky blue opaline, Not sure about the violet gene though, but she is VERY Pretty and has a very light YF...

I would have to wait to breed with her though - i was really looking for a 12month old..... But then again, paitence is the key :)

Will the YF get darker, lighter or stay the same if they were to breed???

If the YF you saw today hadnt moulted yet her YF would get darker.

  • Author

No she hasn't moulted yet!!! she is probably only 8-10 weeks old, and i really hope she is a SHE!!! as i do sometimes mess up sexing when they are young hehe. I will have a long wait ahead before i can breed with her... but It will be worth it to get a YF violet opaline :)

okay Now i am really excited

I think i will be lining up at the shop door at 9am tuesday morning to bringing her home!!!!

I'll post pics of them in their Quarentine cage (i only have 1 :( ) on Tuesday

Ummmm??? Will it be okay to put them in the same quarentine cage when they are from different shops?????

Generally if they're not from the same place, the quarantine rule is to keep them seperate as one may be infected whilst the other isnt... but if you only have one cage, there's not really a whole lot you can do about it i guess, other than treat them both with wormer and such when they get in :)

Sunnie on the forums knows a few places in S.A. to get birds, perhaps she could connect you with someone who has a Yf hen that is of age :(... less waiting, as otherwise it's a long wait before you can breed the new baby hen

Buying from separate places means separate quarantine.....its pretty important.

Hmmmm....I will PM sunnie and see if she knows of anyone who has a YF hen...I think i will post it in the "wanted" section too :D

If seperate cages are best... i well get another...

Will it be okay if its only smallish???

Wow, what a stunning boy you've got there, good luck on your hunt for a hen  .

Just wanted to pop in and say he/she is beautiful :fear

Aww :( sorry to hear that!!! Definatly not your lucky day

No its not my lucky day.

While i was at the shop, some guy parked his massive ute about 6 inches away from my passenger side. I have two toddlers and all mums know how frustrating it is when someone parks too close! :D

I kindly asked if he could move his ute over a bit so I could get my daughter in the car.... Wellll... all *** broke loose and he was "F*** this" and "you F*** that" :yelling: and called me some VERY nasty names at full voice in front of my kids and many bystanders in the car park. I was very upset and shaken after he finally drove off still screaming at me.

I just hope Kama will do it's work today - (Laughing out loud) B)

i think i need to go back to bed so i can start today all over again

oh that is horrible :S it's not liek what you asked was unreasonable... was an absoloute T**ser!

sounds like a horrible start to your day, hope the rest of your day goes better.

Home safe, had some lunch, vented to my hubby :D .

I don't cope will with people yelling at me.

I'm a bit of a wimp with conflict - (Laughing out loud)

Getting back on topic....

I have now been to every bird/pet shop in the north of Adelaide. Even those dreaded ones that shall not be named - hehe. If you work in one of thoes shops you will have seen me there in the last few days (Laughing out loud) ;)

If you havent seen me then please let me know, becuase it means I have missed your shop - (Laughing out loud)

I have down graded my expectations from the opaline YF with violet gene to just a YF blue female. I cant find any YF blue females ANYWHERE!!!!!!!!! Getting desperate! Is the YF Blue a sex linked mutation? The lady in my local shop mentioned something about the drought causing more Male Chicks????

What is going on????????
