An unwell budgie not eating much is a reason to get his illness diagnosed and treated. Budgies that show they arent well usually have been unwell for a long time and it can be very serious......please supply more information or a picture of the bird.

:bluebudgie: A picture of the budgie might help but remember we are no substitute for an avian vet, and it sounds like this might be cause for professional help, sorry your little one isn't feeling well. :(

Sorry to hear about your little fella. I have an unwell one also who's off to the vet tomorrow. Perhaps you should do the same? Good Luck and let us know how you go.

Thanks everyone..the budgie has seen a vet and had treatment but they don't think it's an illness as such, as vet treatment doesn't work...let me explain...the bird isn't mine but I have seen and experienced what it does and it's a circle of things that keep happening....it's a male bird about three years old and it lives with three other male birds but even when it lived with less birds it still acted in this way....now how do I explain without making it sound sordid :) ...it masturbates itself on a branch in front of a mirror for days on end and then it is so exhausted it looks ready to drop...during this time it doesn't eat much and so gets weak and has to be taken out to recover on it's own, only to start the process again once it's got his energy back :D .....I just thought if I could get advice on helping with it's food intake/energy levels, it might stop this crazy behaviour....poor bird gets so excited and is so engrossed in it's own pleasure that it forgets everything else including eating...any advice would be appreciated....at the moment the bird has spent a few days resting and is now back with the others and is looking ready for action :D oh dear :(Laughing out loud): Thanks

Get rid of the mirror! It sounds like he thinks his mate is in the mirror and he is mating with it. Mirrors and shiny toys (bells etc) are a big no no for birds you want to breed and train. If he can't see himself he may have no reason to pleasure himself??? Hope this may help.

Totally agree with Maesie on this piece of advice.....do get rid of the mirror. :hap:

inmature i know...

He loves himself ;) ... sounds like an easy fix though - bye bye mirror ^_^-_-

I agree, get rid of the mirror and put him on a course of Sparks and Probotics. Three or Four days on this will perk him up.

If you read my other post you would understand why I wrote this....the budgie pleasures himself to the point of exhaustion and makes himself extremely weak and unwell, chosing to do this rather than eat alot of the time....he can't be bored, as he's in a large aviary with three other budgies but ignores them all in favour of the mirror...as I said in the previous post "I just thought if I could get advice on helping with it's food intake/energy levels, it might stop this crazy behaviour"...I didn't feel comfortable to explain in full initially due the nature of the problem...sorry if I confused you.

Has removing the mirror helped Lisa ?

Thanks everyone for their advice...mirror has been removed...my friend now has a very grumpy budgie :yellowhead: here's hoping he cheers up soon.. :)..he misses his reflection no doubt...on the plus side the birds are interacting more with eachother which is a good sign...will keep you updated. Thanks

I hope he finds a new life apart from his mirror, and becomes strong and social again.

:ygbudgie: Sounds like things are getting better, even if he is grumpy. :yellowhead:
