Posted January 25, 200817 yr Hi Everyone, Can anyone tell me any more about Crested Budgies like: How much should I pay for a pair? Are they harder to breed than normal budgies? What happens if you put a crested budgie with a normal budgie? Any info is appreciated? Thanks
January 25, 200817 yr Hi There, crested budgies are gorgeous! i have considdered breeding them too... They are about $50 each because they are quite rare.... I also believe you are not meant to breed 2 crested budgies together for the genetics will create a problem with the chicks - hence, chrested and normal paring is better.... I am very vauge with all this info and i look forward to reading what the others say.
January 25, 200817 yr I have also read that pairing two crested budgies produces a lethal gene, but I'm no expert, I'm sure one of the much more experienced breeders will help you out . Edited January 25, 200817 yr by Bec Sta
January 25, 200817 yr Cresteds are a rare variety and even amongst show breeder hard to obtain. Especially harder to obtain one of any decent size. Your best bet is to approach show breeders and find a crested breeder to try and buy some of the culls. Crested are never bred crested to crested....I think the go is crested to crest bred ( or splits ) mostly. The inquiry you have just made has also been made many times on here and as we have no crested breeders in quantity on here, there has been few responses in this regard. Have you inquired of local show breeders to your area ?
January 25, 200817 yr I have bred the crest before and Kas is right , you must breed crest to Normal this will give you Crests or tufts and crest bred normals, From this you pair the crest bred (split) back to the crest to breed crests in quanity . Crest to crest will breed crests but you obtain a cumalitive effect where you can have multipal crests anywhere on the bird . There is a good breeder in our club that has some top crest birds , They do sell them and They range from $20 and up , I have seen them around at bird sale days and auctions so your best bet is to keep an eye out and buy when you find one , P.S you only need one to start.
January 25, 200817 yr Author Thanks for all the info, A local breeder has some advertised I had a look at them and he has a few nice sized males left ( I think they are Tufted). Do you think it is worth buying 1 or 2 and breeding them? Interested in your thoughts. I have done a bit of reading up on them and you are all right do not breed them together but breed them with a Normal.

January 26, 200817 yr Author I went back to the shop yesterday and brought 2 x Male Crested Budgies. Both were normal greens one was ringed 2006 and the other ringed 2007. So both are young birds, a good size and in great condition. I'm very happy and will try and find partners for them once quaratine is over.
