Where Did That Chick Come From ?

I have a nest with a recessive pied green cock and a split recessive opaline green hen...they had just a couple of eggs for round 3. Added to that I put two eggs from a yellow lacewing hen in that nest as well. With the hot weather and often times some hens getting off the nest on a hot day, we ended up with only one chick hatching in the recessives nest.

Here where the puzzle comes into it. The chick is not a green based bird. So does not belong to the parents of the nest. As it turns out does not belong to the lacewings eggs either.

So, picture me scratching my head and trying to work out where this blue series chick came from. Took me a few days. :)

Then it came to me. :)

I had a cinnamon violet show hen who suffered eggbinding when we had some extremely hot days in a row. She was paired up with a violet boy. When she became eggbound she was put immediately in the hospital cage with a warm lamp, drops of calcivet to the beak and over a couple of days she got well again. Whilst perching she passed the egg, so I had an egg on the floor of the hospital cage. I now remember putting it in the nest next door, just in case it would turn out to be something.

So that where this blue series chick came from. She's rather a lovely cinnamon violet like her mother, decent size and very pretty. Both parents still around in the aviary and her foster parents none the wiser as to who she really belongs to.

All this happened when my computer crashed recently and I lost a lot of my breeding records and notes.

Good thing I racked my brains, fought the cobwebs in my head and worked it out. Photos to come.

Good thinking Kaz. I hate when I can't think of it but it is right there :). I look forward to pics.

makes me glad I keep paper and computer records... (i frequently have pc issues as my hubby is a pc tech and likes to "fiddle with things")... glad you figured out the mystery though!! I can't wait to see the chick, violets are my favorite :)

it sounds like it will be a pretty baby even though it took a while to worked out where it came from.

Can't wait for those photos!!!!!!! Well done Kaz for remembering!
