Is it safe to let budgies munch on fresh Eucy leaves. I thought it would be okay as they like it and i assumed that traditionally in the wild they would. My sister inlaw(who is also a budgie owner) tells me they will get stoned-like koalas do. Does anyone know. They seem healthy and happy - have i made an error.

i dont think eucyluptus leaves causes animals to get stoned, the reason koalas look stoned is that the leaves aren't very nutritious and it is the only think koalas eat and there metabalism is very slow meaning they have very little energy. i have never feed it to my budgies so i dont know if it good or bad for them

Eucalyptus branches/leaves are safe for budgies, though I would give it a wash down before letting your budgies have it incase sprays or some such thing have been used on it :yellowhead: .

Its more for entertainment when confined to their cage whilst i am at work,then as a food source. I cut off a leafy sprig and they climb on it and hang upside down on it, but they do also have a bit of a munch. As long as it does not effect them in any negative way. I know that the tree is safe as it is in my back yard, but i rinse them is case of pollutants, and the water droplets add to their fun.

I do the same thing for my guys, it's for entertainment purposes rather than nutritional value .

Very benificial for them , they get all sorts of nutrients from leaves and stems and love to chew the bark off, Definately wash not just for sprays but outside birds poop could contain disease .

You can also try hibiscus branches.

My budgies regularly get eucalyptus, peppermint tree branches and hibiscus. Its nature's medicine. They smell it coming and line up waiting for theirs to arrive. They go absolutely mad over peppermint tree the most.

I have never seen live eucalyptus trees/branches in any flower or plant shops in Toronto Canada. I have looked as I've heard its an excellent plant to give your birds.

 

I have seen dried eucalyptus branches everywhere as its used to decorate with flower bouquets.

 

My birds love to chew on apple tree branches & sugar cane.

 

So I wonder if I could give them dried eucalyptus branches ?

Thanks for the reassurance on the eucy leaves My oldest Colourann absolutely refuses to eat any fresh food at all. I do not know her history as she came to me as a mature bird, but I am assuming that it was a seed only diet because she just won't, even though she sees the others doing so. The eucy leaves are her only variety, so i was concerned by the getting stoned on eucy thing. The other plants suggested are not in my garden, but my mum has an apple tree, so i will give that a try too

I heard from a breeder that willow tree branchs will make them really randy too, cos when hes wanting his to breed he will go out and get some branches from a willow tree and it sends them over the top ......

My aviary budgies will go nuts for a branch of eucalyptus leaves!!

i have been putting branches of eucalyptus and bottle brush in my avairy and the budgies will sit on them but will not eat them.

The peppermint tree, a favorite food of the western ring tail possum and many birds. The peppermint tree is recognisable by its soft pendulous foliage, clusters of tiny white flowers and the peppermint-like smell of its leaves when they are crushed.

 

My budgies on peppermint tree.....its like catnip to a cat, peppermint tree to a budgie !!

 

Thanks for the info Karen! I will keep my eyes peeled for a pepermint tree - i dont think i have ever seen one before, but i wasn't looking either . There is a lemon sented gum tree at my mums house... is that safe to give them???

is bottlebrush safe for them to eat as well or only to use as a perch?
