Posted January 20, 200817 yr Hi Im very new and dont really know if Im writing this in the correct spot. My name is Kim and of course we have registered because of our budgie. She is 5.3 yrs old Our question is: she is bald around her bottom, about the size of a 5 cent piece. I have photos but dont know how to attach???? We dont know what this could be caused by, as she is let out of her cage :glare: everyday and all weekend until we all go to bed. So I dont think its from boredom or lack of companionship Mind you she is in the moulting period at present, but we have never seen this with her before Any suggestions....... Luke says: please excuse my bottom being dirty when Kim took the photo.....
January 20, 200817 yr Sometimes when the hens get older and when coming into breeding condition they will lose some feathers from around their vent area, if her poop is still normal and the feather loss is not bothering her than I would not worry bout it. You can post pictures through a site called photobucket , details in the main forum. Welcome :glare:
January 20, 200817 yr I would watch her behavior make sure she is not acting lethargic, not eating, watery poos. We have a good FAQ article in the health section about signs when your budgie is sick. You may want to find an avian vet now in case you may have to take her in. Keep up updated and welcome to the forums.
January 21, 200817 yr :ygbudgie: Welcome to the forum, if we could see some pictures, that would be great. Has she gotten fat lately? :yellowhead:
January 21, 200817 yr Author Kim again here. She doesn't seem to have gained any weight. And her spirit is as always, full of life and flying around freely around our home (carefully though) The only thing is her little vent not looking quite right. Although the attached picture does not justice for her, please rest assured that we do try and keep her clean most days, when she lets us :yellowhead: , gently wipe it down ( cotton ball, water - not even lukewarm) Visit My Website
January 21, 200817 yr Author Have you wormed her lately and what colour are her poops. Â Â We have the bottle here to worm her. But I have been too scared incase of an impact on whats going on??? Does that make sense. Should I do it straight away, irrespective of her bottom at present Her poop is normal, solid, white and green. Sometimes runny but only every three to four days....

I would not give her any greens or soft food and best to give your local vet a call and explain what is happening in the morning . But dont be to alarmed , is she okay or fluffed up and looking tired and lifeless.

Its just hard to not think the worst When I say green, its not bright green, its a dark olive green. She is not fluffed up and definitely not tired. Everyday she is as if nothing is going on....! Its me thats doing all the worrying !!!! But as suggested, I will call our vet tomorrow and discuss what could be going on. Thanks so much to all of you, for your replies I have been overwhelmed (considering Im just a budgie pet owner) and out of my league when it comes to the things you guys do with them..ie: shows/breeding I really do appreciate your assistance. Will keep you posted on outcomes to date, where I can
January 21, 200817 yr Make sure you call an avian vet not a just the local vet because they know every little about birds. They will say they see them but trust me I have been in a situation and have learned first hand they don't know much about our feathered friends. We have an avian vet look-up in our FAQ and even if it is a distance I suggest an avian vet because they do specialize in birds.  Have you given her any greens lately, changed her diet around, her cage, any situation she was in that she could have been stressed out? All these things too can cause watery poos.  I wouldn't worm her personally I would take her to the avian vet and let them do a poop check to make sure that is what is really going on here. Since she is an only bird worms is probably unlikely.  At the avian vets office this will be part of the check-up.  1. Weight her 2. Do a physical check, feeling her keel bone, under by her chest for any lumps etc.. 3. Do a poop culture 4. Look down your birds throat to ensure there are no spots or infection  One thing you must remember about birds is they do not have to look sick to be sick. Weight loss, watery poos usually comes first before lethergic behavior (once you have that is can be too late). Again I learned first hand with Pretty who passed away very suddenly.  I do ask all the questions above about stress, and diet change too because I don't want to alarm you because she could be fine too.
January 23, 200817 yr Hi, Welcome. that is good that you are going to take your budgie to the vet and like what Elly has already mentioned, make sure it is an avian vet. l'm hoping that your budgie is okay. please keep us updated.
January 24, 200817 yr Author Hi, Welcome.that is good that you are going to take your budgie to the vet and like what Elly has already mentioned, make sure it is an avian vet. l'm hoping that your budgie is okay. please keep us updated. Â We have just bought her home from the Avian Vet - she stayed in overnight and had some xray's today. It has been confirmed that she has a kidney tumour and there is nothing that we can do.We bought her home because as discussed with the Vet, while she is still in good spirits, eating and flying around okay, we should take advantage of the time. There is obviously no time scale that can be put on it, as it depends on the aggressiveness and growth rate. But when the time comes, we will not make her suffer. They did offer to give her some Cortosteriods but not while she is still okay as it has bad side effects, plus it will not prolong life, but only make it easier for her to deal with..... To tell the truth, I feel like complete ****, but she is with us again tonight ( it was so quiet here last night) and there is some peace of mind now that we know what is really going on. Once again, I would really like to reiterate my thanks to you all for your suggestions and insights, to what this could have been. We really do appreciate you taking the time to feed back. Thanks again Kim and Lucy beep beep (thats lucy talk)
January 24, 200817 yr Oh Kim, I'm so sorry for your news. Poor Lucy! As long as she's okay at the moment, make the most of your time with her. When it's time to let her go, I believe both you and her will know. It will be hard for you both, but may you gain strength in the fact you have done the very best for her you could! She loves you for it and always will, no matter how much longer you have together. ((((((hugs))))) to you Kim and Lucy maesie xxx ooo xxx
January 24, 200817 yr I am terribly sorry that your news was not more positive an outcome I think you have made some very sensible and well thought out decisions faced with what must be very difficult times for you all. Please keep us up to date on how she fares. Maybe she has more time than you think. Â Take care :angel1: KAZ
January 24, 200817 yr I am so glad you were able to get her to an avian vet although the news is not good you have a peace of mind that now you know what is wrong and the decision to make her happy and comfortable while she is with you is wonderful. Know that my heart goes out to you and that you are in my thoughts. Please keep us updated on Lucy.
January 25, 200817 yr l'm so sorry to hear the sad news :budgiedance: l'm glad the vet was able to determine what was wrong with Lucy. l just wish it was better news.
January 25, 200817 yr :ygbudgie: Sorry for your sad, sad news but glad you took her to the vet for a definitive diagnosis. May Lucy spend some more quality time with you and you will know when it is time to let her go. For some of the bird owners in the world that just don't care, thank goodness, you do, bless you! :angel1:
January 25, 200817 yr I'm sorry Lucy has a tumor :budgiedance: but i am very happy that you showed what true love takes for a bird.... The fact you didn't ignore everyones advice is excellent as we have a few "members" who tend to think they know better... You did what was best for your bird and although the outcome is not a happy one, atleast you know that she can have the best, most comfortable rest of her life ahead. Don't feel guilty in anyway, shape or form as you did what was right by your bird and the tumor was not your making. Thinking of you, and wishing well for lucy Libby xx
January 25, 200817 yr Hi Kim I met you at the vet's (I'm Glynnis). I'm so very sorry about the news, you did the right thing and I wish so much it could have turned out better. I followed her case and talked to her constantly in the hospital so she wasn't alone. She was so very friendly, and I know you both love each other very much. Thank you for following the advice of these wonderful people here, and I hope you have peace of mind now despite the sad news. Hope Lucy enjoyed the feast, and the ones to come. I know the rest of her life will be happy and comfortable with you. *hugs* Edited January 25, 200817 yr by Chrysocome

But just so you know Lucy has been chattering away and wolf whistling at us since she has been home. She is eating like a stuffed turkey, Im taking that as a good sign and shes drinking still too. We were just so happy we were able to bring her home and still have a little more time with her, until!!!! But at the moment she is happy eating her millet head ( I know its meant to be a treat, but yeah were spoiling her even more now) sitting on her out of cage pozzi. Sorry, I was constantly getting chocked up on Thursday too - I just wanted to take her home. Hope you understand...my heart was with Lucy at the time. But I will keep you posted on her, so far, so good ! Thanks again for being with her during her stay, Lucy and I are 110% ever so grateful for that and its great knowing she was being talked too. She loves her chats........Im sure you will be exceptional in your career too
