Posted January 19, 200817 yr Bare with me as im about to try and explain how to line breed for 17 years with just one pair of birds . It will help if you can draw as you read ( ie write the number then draw a line from both parents to the offspring ) Hen No 1 ---------------------Paired to ----------------------------Cock No 2 - - - - - Offspring No 3 1/2 blood of parents We have cock 2 mated with hen 1 produces group 3 Cock 2 mated to female from group 3 produces group No5 ( 3/4 blood of cock2) Cock 2 mated to female from group 5 produces group No 8 ( 7/8 blood of cock 2 ) So then on the Hens side we have Cock from group 3 mated back to Hen No 1 produces group No 4 (3/4 blood of Hen ) Cock from group 4 mated back to Hen No 1 produces group No6 (7/8 blood of Hen ) Hope you are still with me :rip: We have so far basically created two families one on the hens side and one on the cocks side , we now have to cross these two families together if we are to continue with the blood line. The cock from group 5 mated with hen from group 4 produces group No 7 ( 1/2 blood of original pair No 1 & 2 ) The cock from group 6 mated with hen from group 4 produces group No 9 ( 13/16 blood ) The cock from group 7 mated with hen from group 6 produces group No 10 ( 11/16 blood ) The cock from group 8 mated with hen from group 6 produces group No 11 ( back to 1/2 blood of original pair No 1& 2 ) The cock from group 8 mated with hen from group 5 produces group 13 ( 13/16 blood ) The cock from group 8 mated with hen from group 7 produces group 12 ( 11/16 blood ) The cock from group 9 mated with hen from group 11 produces group 14 ( 21/34 blood The cock from group 12 mated with hen from group 9 produces group 15 ( 9/16 blood ) The cock from group 12 mated with hen from group 10 produces group 16 ( back to 1/2 blood of original pair No 1 & 2 ) The cock from group 13 mated with hen from group 10 produces group 17 (9/16 blood ) The cock from group 13 mated with hen from group 11 produces group 18 (21/32 blood ) If you are still with me , We end up with groups 14 and 18 having the blood to the original cock and hen .
January 19, 200817 yr This is very good Lonebudgie. I will pin this topic for future reference. Thanks :rip:
January 19, 200817 yr Wow you've lost me hehe maybe one day when i'm an "official" show breeder and want to line breed i'll understand it more :rip: til then... i'll keep on it
January 19, 200817 yr Quite interesting, I have linebred ferrets and working dogs(mine) but not birds with a similar structure. I shall have to work out what % my ferrets are to the original workers.
January 21, 200817 yr great info!! thanks for posting it. Going to print it off and save for my own breeding refrence.
January 22, 200817 yr It looks very interesting, could you put up some photos of the birds,so I can have a look at your work.Thanks.
January 22, 200817 yr It looks very interesting, could you put up some photos of the birds,so I can have a look at your work.Thanks. Hey macka , Ive only bred up to 7/8 blood , by this stage I usually cross to other birds , as my quality isnt good enough to continue to in-breed , Im just working on one or two features each year and hopefully continue to improve . The only bird I have in photobucket is a picture of a grey cock I took about three years ago , Ill have to take the camera up the back and snap some shots when I get time. :hap: Edited December 8, 200816 yr by Daz
February 9, 200817 yr Very Good topic. Most animals are inbreed / line breed. Horses, Cattle, goats, pigs..... Show Breeding of any animals involve this form of breeding. What you can enhance can be good and bad. The golden rule is never, never pair two animals with the same fault. All you will do is to "fix" the fault in the line and then it's hard to get out.
