Disinfecting A Cage

Featured Replies

As i have posted in a previous post - my daughter's budgie has just died - i thought he had scaly face but the vet seemed to think he had beak & feather disease.

He suggested i disinfect the cage and leave it with no birds in it for 2 months. Does that sound right?

My daughter is anxious to get a new baby :) and one from a proper breeder this time as im sure the pet shop sold us a dodgy bird - well 2 because the previous one died that we got from there too!

okay so back to my cage. The budgie was only in it for 3 days tops as we brought him a new cage on Sunday.

I would be careful about some disinfectants as they can be harmful to birds. There are bird specific ndisinfectants to be found at bird specialist supply stores. I dont know any brand names off hand.

I have just spoken to a bird dealer I do regular business with, who has been dealing for over 30 years and he said that he hadnt ever heard of beak and feather in a budgie, that it sounds like it was probably more likely a very severe case of scaley face. He also suggested the best thing to disinfect the cage with is vinegar and hot water. I hope this helps :) I dont know if a bird dealer's word could be taken over a vet, but they wouldnt have any reason to not give advice on their own experience.

I agree with this advice from Sunnie re the scaly face VS beak and feather. Some vets who arent full bird vets get it wrong. Sounded like scaly face to me.

Hi Mistyl

Sorry to hear your bird died, budgies don't die from scaly face either. The only was to determin how he died is to have an autopsy by a proper bird vet, there are at least half a dozen serious diseases with the same symptoms.Your bird dealer sounds quite hopless, birds can suffer from the polyoma virus which will attack feathers and beaks.Feed your bird on a good quality birdseed thats been fortified with vitimins(go to a pet shop)and remember birds don't do well on seed alone, also include grass, beets, apples, and wild seeds are great alot of birds die from malnutrition. Hope this helps, there are some great internet sites about budgies.here's one

Hi

Great advice for all Budgiebum. That website is great with easy to follow instructions on what to feed etc. Im sorry to hear of your loss Mistyl.

From the other post about the budgie's illness, the vet advised her to have the bird put to sleep. So it seems to me it didnt die of scaley face, but the vet said it had beak and feather and that it wouldnt recover, so he/she put it to sleep.
