Posted January 16, 200817 yr My 11yo daughter had a budgie we got from a Pet Shop but after a few months he got really sick and died. He was very limp and shaking and his eyes were all swollen over. We brought her another budgie (from the same pet shop). She fell in love again and he was very tame at first. I had a few issues about his behaviour though - he seems to tremble alot down one side - i took him back to the shop but they said it was just fear and he was okay while there - he also had a bit of a funny foot - looked swollen and his beak looked dry and cracking. He seemed okay apart from that - he would love to sing when we had loud music on. Is that not good for budgies? Loud music? Anyhow last week i noticed that his beak was getting crusty and yuk - so i got some scaly face oinment to put on it. He got worse the last few days and alot of patches of his skin was showing. We took him to the vet and he suggested to put him down after telling us he had beak and feather disease. My daughter is devastated! She wants a budgie she can handle and get to talk to her. Any advice?? Any breeders in the South of Adelaide?? Sonya
January 16, 200817 yr Hi sonya, i'm sorry to hear of your bad luck with birds As i do for everyone requesting a tame budgie in adelaide i'll recommend my close friend who also comes on this forum (Sunnie) She's located in adelaide and has had many people satisfied with her birds... i'm pretty sure she has some young birds in the nest atm so if you get in quick and request or select one she'll pull it aside for you Welcome to the forum and i hope your budgie owning experience improves from here...
January 16, 200817 yr Author Thanks Libby I have messaged Sunnie but i guess she is in bed now where i should be! (Laughing out loud) I found the vet very helpful and honest so that was a good thing - he told my daughter that she did a good job of looking after him which made her smile through her tears and let her have a last hold before taking him away. We just brought him a bigger cage on Sunday - the Vet suggested we thoroughly disinfenct it and have it in the sun to get rid of any diseases that might be lingering . I look forward to hearing from Sunnie
January 16, 200817 yr As far as im aware there is no cure for Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease, other than cleaning everything in the avairy with a Quarintine ammonia, your local pet shop is probaly spreading the disease to every bird they have in that cage or cages next to them , A very good reason to Quarentine all birds when you get new ones. Im sorry you have gone through this , If you were near me you could come around and have one. The best I can do is , you can try these two numbers and they should be able to help you with a breeder in your area. Budgie Council of S.A . Bob Deverson ( 08) 82633169 or Budgie Society S.A. Gordon Franklin (08) 83882618. Goodluck.
January 16, 200817 yr Author Aww thank you so much - you are very sweet! Do you think i just clean the cage with Dettol and leave in the sun for a few days be enough? He was only in this cage for 3 days. I threw the other cage out - the one that had him and the other bird in it for a while. Sonya
January 16, 200817 yr Welcome to our forums. I am very sorry to hear about the experiences you have been through with this pet shop. You may want to report them if there is someone you can report them too along with what has happened to you. They may do an investigation and get the pet shop to do their part. It does sound like it is spreading to all their birds and they yet haven't realized it.
January 17, 200817 yr Thanks Libby I have sent my contact details to Mistyl via pm and hope I can help her out
January 17, 200817 yr So sorry to hear about you and your daughter's unfortunate experiences. Sounds like this pet store is running "bird mill" operation and selling ill birds, do express your concerns to somebody. Glad you found a great vet, disinfect the cage thoroughly as has been suggested and get your new budgie from a reputable breeder from here. Good luck!
January 17, 200817 yr Just a note, you may want to advise the pet shop as they may not realise the birds have this disease. And as everyone suggested buy from a reputible breeder.
January 17, 200817 yr So sorry for your losses. You and your daughter sound like you've had a bad start to the world of budgies, I'm sure if will get better from here on in. To clean the cage, I'd prob use vinegar or a cage cleaner from a pet shop (not the one you got the birds from :hap: , they should no longer get your business). Plenty of sun and air and see how you go. Just remember to rinse well with really hot/boiling water. Good luck with getting another budgie (from a breeder).
January 17, 200817 yr Welcome to the forum, I'm very sorry to here of your losses . :hap: little ones. Good luck in finding a new baby and just keep in mind that even though times are sometimes hard, owning budgies can very much be fun and rewadring experience :hap: .
