Posted January 15, 200817 yr Just a quick g'day to introduce myself and the guys. I've had Budgies since I was a kid but have only started breeding them since 2004. I prefer the pet variety and have 20, all different colours and types. At the moment I have 3 girls on nests (16 eggs in total), 5 have hatched in the past 3 days including what appears to be a set of twins today!! This is the best time and the worst time waiting to see how they all fair. All the very best, Max
January 15, 200817 yr Welcome Max congrats on your babies and eggs especially twins... it think only one other forum member has ever had these (KAZ) Hope you enjoy it here, it's a great place to learn and expand your love of budgies
January 15, 200817 yr Hi Max. Welcome to you and your flock. Congrats on your new arrivals. I know what you mean about the waiting process. You wait to see if they lay okay, then to see how many, then if they're fertile, then if they'll hatch, then if the parents feed okay, then if they all survive, then what colours they end up and then when they fledge... Whoo... make me anxious and excited just thinking about it. I'd love to see some pictures of your birds and especially the new chicks. Hope you enjoy the forum!
January 15, 200817 yr Hi and welcome to the forum Max, congrats on your new babies. Would love to see some pictures .
January 15, 200817 yr Welcome and when you have a chance we would love to see your flock in pictures . I bet you have a lot of cute shots and we also have a contest going on called Budgie of the Month under Budgie Pictures.
January 16, 200817 yr Author I guess it was inevitable, if I intervene, they're so small, I risk injurying one or both of the twin chicks and if I leave them I run the risk they'll not make it either. Regrettably one of the twins did pass away.... I've posted a picture to try to give people an idea of how small a newly hatched twin is, I hope it doesn't upset anyone. On a much brighter note here are photos of 2 of the girls, Bonnie (who is fostering eggs and chicks from both her daughters) and one of her daughters Swoop, who is on 5 of her own (one chick). All the best, Max
January 16, 200817 yr I had twins too and they are very very tiny. If I had not added an extra feed or two over 3 days initially they would not have made it either. But I would say it takes a lot out of those tiny beings to hatch out of the same egg at the same time. Its rare that they make it as far as they have. Best of luck with the other twin.
January 16, 200817 yr So sorry for your loss. It was very small. Looks like the chicks in my past breeding season (all were either dead in egg or killed by ants , and all very small). I hope your other twin makes it okay... Bonnie and Swoop look like they have got things under control... Have a few questions. (1) Were the twins in the same egg? (sorry if it's a dumb question) if not, how can you tell they are twins when they are this young I'm guesing due to there size it was the same egg. (Thanks Kaz, just read your post) (2) Is Swoop named for the obvious reason??? (Laughing out loud) Thanks xxx Edited January 16, 200817 yr by maesie

January 16, 200817 yr Sorry to hear of your loss, I hope the other twin pulls through. All the best with Bonnie, Swoop and their clutches .

(Laughing out loud) Thanks xxxThanks Maesie, 1 -the only way I knew they were twins was by the egg count each day and the lucky coincidence that Bonnie is not one to eat the empty shells. I've been able to put back the 2 halves of each of the eggs hatched and there's one more chick then eggs. I mark the fostered eggs with different colour felt tip pens so its a bit easier to identify which egg has hatched.2 - Yep, you guessed it, she's the most acrobatic and has been since day one.all the bestMaxHere is the topics about my twinshttp://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....83&hl=twins http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....54&hl=twinshttp://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....32&hl=twins Thanks Kaz,As soon as I worked out they were twins I checked out all the twin topics on this great site, I was just reluctant to jump without giving Bonnie a chance, she was a fantastic mum with her own chicks and shows all the signs of being a brilliant foster mum.I hindsight I could probably have split the twins up an returned one of them to their Mum who doesn't have any chicks as yet but is sitting on 6 eggs.you live and learn,Max

Even shifting baby budgies can end their life if the new parents dont get it right. You just do the best you can and hope it all works out in the end.
January 16, 200817 yr Ive had double yolks before and fertile but never been able to hatch them . And I thought it was not possible for them to survive . You learn something every day. Gday Maximus !!
January 16, 200817 yr Sorry to hear of your loss Maximus…but even though strange occurrences like that are interesting it's probably better that they don't survive. Most twins don't hatch from eggs, because they get tangled up inside & can't chip out. With these "freaks" it's best they are not bred with, as with most things it might have a genetic component . Getting variations like that into our breeding population probable isn't a good thing, for trouble free breeding later on. I had a nice hen [chook] that's eggs were strange, often with miss shaped shells & many didn't hatch. I didn't sit the miss shaped ones, but one of her eggs did hatch & I noticed that the chick hatched from the wrong end of the egg [pointed instead of large end] it was lucky that it made it, but once again not a good thing. When I was young I used to open all my eggs, that didn't hatch to see why [a messy operation often] I don't do it any more. Once I found a young pigeon with two heads, I preserved it in spirits for a long time, but don't remember what happened to it now. Budgies used to once only lay about 6 eggs, which was basically the norm, but even the fact that many these days lay even up to 10 or rarely more isn't a good thing, as I think that about 6 is a good limit for them. January 17, 200817 yr Welcome to the forum Maximus! Sorry to hear of your loss and looking forward to more pictures of your flock.
January 17, 200817 yr Author Due to popular demand, here's the better part of the gang, the rest are on parent duty. all the best, Max

The final egg count for the 3 hens on nests at the moment is 7, 1 & 8. I've been lucky to foster out eggs to get around 5-6 per nest. You have a great flock Max, beautiful budgies, it's very difficult to choose a favourite .Thanks Bec Sta,My favourites the violet/grey normal 3rd from the left - he's called MaximusMax
