Hi everyone - I am brand new to this forum...I don't know anything about budgies, so I am sure I am going to learn heaps, but I do know that they are absolutely gorgeous and I love them.

I am the proud mum of one baby - I am not sure what colour you would call 'her' (for now, till/if her cere colours) she is very light coloured, almost white, with a tinge of yellow in her plumage and given that her eyes are pink, I have assumed she is an albino. We have called her Billie, and we got her Friday last week.

When we purchased her from the pet store one of her wings had been clipped, which has been good in that she is almost hand tame already, however I note with interest that both wings should have been clipped ? Why is that, and should I take her to the vet to have her straightened out ?

She is a lovely little girl and she responds very well to my husband and in fact probably loves him the most so far.

She did have an accident on Wednesday where she flew (as well as she can given that she has a clipped wing) into the wall and had a little bleed from beside her beak. She was very quiet on Wednesday night, however lived through the night and is almost back to normal in that she is eating, drinking, chirping and being quite normal. The bleeding has stopped and there is no damage to her beak, however she has what looks like a scab beside her beak. She was scratching it on Thursday night which I assumed was a good sign, given that when a human's scab is itchy, it means it's healing. Am I right ?

However given her accident, she is now much more skittish around myself and our daughters, and only really responding positively to my husband. Should we try to keep everyone else at bay for a while, and let my husband be the primary handler until she is feeling a little more confident around us girls ?

I might also just mention that about this time last year we also had a budgie, this one was a boy and his name was Charlie and he was the most beautiful bright yellow budgie and he was also a baby when we got him, and we hand tamed him to become an important member of our family - Charlie was my boy and he loved nothing more than sitting on my shoulder and playing with my earrings!! However after only 9 short months of having Charlie in our lives, he got sick during a moult and died. It was the most devastating pet death I have ever been through and many people thought I was crazy crying for a budgie, however I am sure I will now find like - minded people who understand that a hand tame budgie is so much more than 'just a little bird' and that the pleasure you receive from a budgie cannot be adequately described.

Anyway that, I am sure, is enough for my first post !!! I can't wait to hear everyone's advice and when I am at home I will try to upload some photos of both Billie and Charlie.

Cheers, Julie-Anne

:ygbudgie: Welcome to the forum. Julie-Anne, some folks prefer to have their budgie's wings clipped at first but it is definitely a personal choice. This will alleviate the freaking out and bashing into windows. Reading the FAQs is a great place to start as it gives you information on feeding, caging, budgie training and ever so much more. We love pictures, so, when you can, click on my signature to see the allowable sizes of photos that can be posted. Enjoy the forum, I do! :)

Gday! and welcome. :)

Hi and welcome to the forum. I've only been here a few months and everyone is very helpfull and friendly. I'm sure you'll learn lots. I started by reading the FAQ's and old posts relating to what I wanted to learn. Sorry to hear about Charlie, it can be very hard to get over the loss of special pets. Sounds like Billie is a darling, can't wait to see your pics. I'm not real good with sexing, so I'll leave it to someone else. She'll get over her scare eventually. I would give her a day or so (just so she's not freaking out) and I would ALL continue to handle/play with/talk to etc... with her. She will get used to you all again. If you were to let your hubby do all the work, I'd worry she'd become a little over protective of him, and be harder for you to break into 'their' friendship. Just a thought. If you want to give her some space though, you can. You know her better, and just do what you think is best for her. Keep us updated on her progress. Enjoy... maesie xxx

HI Julie-Anne

Welcome to our forum. You will find that any of the ino budgies are harder to sex than the others. Maybe you can post a picture soon and we can try and work it out for you. Chances are the one wing clip has caused the flight accident. If the pet store is close by I would return and ask them to clip the other wing for you ...in a way educating them to learn the correct way to do wings.....both wings that is, not just one.

Cheers Kaz

Welcome Julie.

Wing clipping- the one wing clip is an older way they were done and it causes the bird to become off balanced and as you have stated can cause accidents. Having then both clips still means the bird can not fly (far or high) but they are balanced. If you feel confident int he pet shop do as Kaz said and return there for the other wing to be done OR if you cn find an avian vet near you you, why not see if you like them so you know you have someone to take her to for check up and treatment later on.

Sounds like you are doing good with her taming and I'm with masie - that all of you should keep talking and training her so she didn't bond with just your husband which can cause jealousy issue later.

I'm sorry to hear about Charlie, it is hard to lose these little ones that become part of the family.

I'm thinking Billie might be a Yellowface Ino also called a Creamino. But I would love to see pictures and we can let you know, and guess at her gender (we get most of them right  )
