I just wanted to ask you all about which bords go really well with budgies in aviarys? A friend suggested finches and quails. I know quails are good to go, but am unsure about finches. Do any of you have any other suggestions? We are not ready to set up the aviary yet, have not even got it yet, but i am just doing my research.

You guys are such a hive (aviary!!) of information, I can always rely on you all.

Thanks

Kathy

I personally keep weeros, budgies and quails all in the same aviary and they're fine together... i even have two rabbits who live on the ground :)

I think alot of it has to do is how big the aviary is are you going to be breeding in this aviary (colony) if so this causes issues just between budgies let alone other species. I personally wouldn't put budgies with any other species because of how persnickity they can be (especially some of the hens) but that is me.

I have read of people having success and then just the reverse. I think a lot as to do the size of the aviary, the ratio of budgies to what other birds and do be careful because rabbits tend to poop everywhere I would think that would cause bacteria build up in the aviary if not cleaned out consistently.

I have no intention of breeding any type of birds, I have way too much on my plate already.

What about love birds, I have always loved them. Would they clash with budgies?

My kids want a rainbow of colours, and i thought it would be nice to try keeping s variety of birds.

Let me know what you think anyway.

Thanks

Kathy

I would never mix lovebirds and budgies, they're both aggressive little birds, and the lovebirds could take a leg off a budgie no probs.

If you're not breeding and it's a large aviary you might be able keep cockatiels with budgies, but you would have to be really watchful and ready to remove either species if it didn't work out.

Budgies come in such a massive variety of colours that you could have a rainbow flock without mixing species.

Okie doke... first up definate NO to love birds :budgiedance: i put a budgie into a cage with my love bird when i was 11 for a whole... 3 seconds and my poor boy lost a toe... since then i keep them as far apart as possible. Quails and weero's are the only birds i'd attempt to try with them and like others have said it doesnt always work for all of them... i'm just lucky i guess.

No elly, no build up of bacteria that has killed birds. I havent lost a bird in the aviary for months aside a hen who was old and the rabbits have lived in there for the last 6 months. Rabbits tend to poop in one spot only. They're actually rather clean animals, eat absoloutly everything including seed husks and enjoy their stay in freedom. My younger rabbit pancakes even decided to dig himself a 3m warren out of the aviary :D which has since been bricked up and covered again.

I have 8 quails, 2 rabbits and 3 (2 weero 1 budgie) disabled birds who all sleep on the ground together and huddle up for warmth.

I have seen Libbys aviary with the rabbits in there. Very large aviary, kept very clean and all seems peaceful and balanced.

To Kathy....I would not mix anything with budgies myself, but others have.

SIZE of the aviary is paramount importance....places for every occupant to have space and to hide if need be. Maybe tiels if you can get it to work out.

BUT...here's an idea. If you havent got the future aviary yet and want lots of kinds of birds, why not build a long aviary complex with a separate section for your various types. Aviaries can be bought very cheaply off ebay and from the local newpaper....and the larger ones are harder to sell and come cheaper as they usually are slightly troublesome to dismantle and move. Worth a thought

I had a rabbit they are very awesome and yes clean. I was just worried about the pooping even in one place but I have no doubt that if taken care correctly such as libby is and others that there would not be an issue.

okay I think we will stick to just budgies, otherwise it just gets too complicated!

I know exactly where I can get a rainbow flock from as well (Sunnie) so when it all happens, we will post some pickies for you all.

Thanks guys

Kathy

i have a large avairy with some breeding zebra finches, couple java sparrows, pair of bourkes, quail and a collared dove with my budgies

Definitely never mix any other bird with any variety of African Lovebird, even if you have an established aviary of Lovebirds, in my experience never introduce another new bird, [Lovebird] as it will be dead in a short time.

:parrot: I cannot emphasize enough that lovebirds cannot be housed with ANY other birds, sometimes including lovebirds. My lovebird Phoebe, was housed by herself at the rescue as when she had been initially been put in the aviary with the other lovebirds, she and her female partner, ganged up, attacked others and refused to let them eat or drink. I decided to get Phoebe as we really hit it off (she caused a big commotion) when I went to adopt another lovebird and she was okay with Mango when I got him a few months later. Oddly enough, they do have separate cages and end out hanging out together in one or the other's cages when they are let out. (or smashed together on my shoulder as I now type).

I know that budgies and cockatiels were sometimes housed together at the rescue in a large aviary DEPENDING on their personalities. All I know is that my budgies bother my cockatiels. :parrot:

A weero or weiro is another name for a Cockatiel :D

Ah yes sorry... should've called them their proper names... for some weird reason we west australians call them "weeros" :D maybe it's because we're so isolated from the rest of the country hehe :P

:P We are in the same boat NickNack, sometimes when the Australians talk about animals, birds, fruits and vegetables..............I have NO idea!!! :D
