Could someone please tell me if there is an actual breeding season for budgies? (in Australia).

I have heard many conflicting stories on this subject:

 

All year round

September to January

March onwards

 

I would love it if someone could clear this up for me?

I have several hens in condition but as it's getting very hot here at the minute I am unsure as to whether or not to put them in breeding cages?

Budgies will breed all year round and breed themselves to death if you let them.

The only breeding season for a budgie is imposed upon them by breeders putting them down to breed at a time of year best suited to show breeding circles, suited to climatic conditions, and restricted only by your breeding set up and how comfortable the birds will be breeding in extreme climates.

I agree with KAS , you are the one in control , breed them when they are in condition and when it suits your time frame .

In the show circles its difficult because we get our new club rings on the 1st of jan and most breeders will have some birds down so they can get the new rings on early and so be able to have older birds when the young bird shows come around , as you know it is very hot at this time of year and it isnt very nice on the chicks in the nest.

I guess that only matters if you are a budgie living wild in Australia and then that would also depend on the amount of food and water and the weather. In captivity and with an abundance of food and water a budgie WILL breed all year around if you let it and it will die trying to produce eggs and babies non stop if you allow it to breed all year round.

YES...thats what I have said....They WILL breed themselves to death IF YOU LET THEM. Budgies in captivity will not observe a breeding season that exists for birds in the wild. If you have a pile of birds in an aviary with fixed nesting boxes all year round you will get birds that breed all year round and die because of it

Thats okay. When you have some photos you can post of your budgies we would like to see them.

I GENERALLY BREED MT BIRDS OVER THE SPRING/SUMMER PERIOD. BUT GENERALLY IF THE BIRDS SEE A NESTING BOX THEN THEY WILL BREED.

If you are with Photobucket, there is an edit feature which allows you to resize any photo you load up onto photo bucket. Spring is the natural time for any wild life to reproduce. And personally, I bred my budgies when they were ready. Even if that meant the middle of winter. I would increase light (UV bulbs), give them more baths, and give them even more vegies and suppliments to get them in tip top condition, as if they would in spring. I would let my pair(s) have 2 clutches right after eachother, than many months 'on vacation' hehe
