Posted January 6, 200817 yr okay this will be my first attempt at posting pics here so if too large (please let me know how to rectify it) and if they don't work (all help would be appreciated). I bought a couple of budgies yesterday (these are all in quarantine) and this one was one of two babies running around the avery floor (felt sorry for it) so decided to get it as a pet (I'm sure it's a female so may end up not being a pet and later when can fly put in with some others) and am told it's been out of the nest about 3 weeks. So what colour would you call it? It's grey and white, head and side of head has some areas of the light bar markings. Sorry if pics are not good enough to tell thee markings. Kind Regards, Harlequinlover
January 6, 200817 yr l would say that your cute little budgie is a Doublefactor Dominant Pied, and it looks like it is a hen. Edited January 6, 200817 yr by birdluv
January 6, 200817 yr i'd also say it's opaline by how light the small amount of barring appears :rip:
January 6, 200817 yr Your bird is very heavily Pied so it’s hard to tell much more about it’s mutation, but it is a Blue series bird, maybe Mauve. It’s wings may have been cut, but it looks a little like it’s what they call a “Runner” a bird that has suffered from French Moult, Polyoma virus, that’s why it was running on the floor. Apart from that it looks healthy. It’s wing flight feathers look to be growing back, so it may recover all right. Sadly lots of people let their heart judge their purchases, whereas picking a bird that looks sad, fluffed up, quite etc can be a disaster…that’s when you should be looking for the most alert, active, healthy looking birds, as you can easily bring home someone else’s problems & spread it to any other birds you may have, even when doing the best to pick the best there, is still a risk of disease.
January 6, 200817 yr Cute little girl budgie, but as Norm says a french moult budgie. It may NOT grow its feathers back and fly. If the new feathers TRYING to grow break and bleed you will need to pull the rest of the shaft out to stop the bleeding Here's how http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/faqs/i...%20bloodfeather SOME of the french moult babies grow their flights back. Of all the ones I have had only ONE in about 12 have grown their feathers back and kept them. Some french moult budgies also have limited lifespans...not ALL but some. They are often otherwise affected. In the meantime, ladders from floor to perch will help your youngster and give it abetter life. If ever faced with a choice to take on a bird like this, try and make sure the breeder gives it to you for free, as THEY KNOW what the budgie is afflicted with even if you didnt. Best of luck Kaz
January 6, 200817 yr Author Thanks, I bought it as a pet to hand train as have been told these runners are easier to do this with. I only paid a couple of dollars for it, it's flights are growing back (no not cut) and there was another from the same nest also running around but it had blood on it's chest (they were both quite active) because they climb the wire to get up high parts in the avery they came out of. The bird when I put my hand in it's new cage is also very active, squarks etc. and keeps trying to get away but after a while it sits on my finger. I doubt the person knew what the problem was for the moult as appeared quite unknowledgeable, I had to clarify that a harlequin was a budgie and their pet one has cinnamon on it's wings. okay so it's probably a double dominant pied (opaline) which sounds very likely as the person avery bred and had dominant pieds, clearwings and some others. I'll have to read up about french moult. Thanks again. Kind Regards, Harlequinlover
