Hi everyone lm new to the forum so hope to get to know a few of you

Our flock consists of a galah, budgies and rainbow lorikeets also Quails

The last few days have been extremly hot and we have lost a few budgies my husband seems to think its the weather so l have started nozzle spraying during the hot weather,to all the birds..

Another we brought in out of the heat as it wasnt well this morning and it passed away,Now we have just brought in another one inside near the fan....hopefully this is okay...so far this one is still alive...we have them in a large aviary with a big pond of water also containers of water l also put wet towels up on the roof of the avairy to cool it down so could anyone please tell me of its just the heat some of them have there beaks moving fast as anything .... husband said the heat yet once again just wanting some advice please ...regards and happy new year

Hi , it does sound like the heat if your birds are panting and have thier wings open . Sounds like you are doing the right thing. You can try puting the garden sprinkler on to of the avairy and turn it on , this will cool the entire avairy and reduce the heat around the avairy , sometimes just spraying the birds will only cool them breifly and then the humidity will make them hotter if you dont follow up with spraying . Beware though to stop spraying before it gets to late , because if your birds dont dry before the night they can easily chill . Goodluck hope they will be okay . :budgiedance:

Hi and welcome to the forum, sorry to hear of your losses :budgiedance: .

You could try adding ice blocks or even a small frozen drink bottle to their water dish, our outdoor birds love taking a bath in it in the hot weather.

:D

Hi and welcome to the forum. Everyone is awsome here! So sorry about your losses. Is sounds like my place. We've had several days over 40C but luckly enough I haven't lost anyone yet. I also have an avairy so I'll let you know what I've been doing. Dad and I have built a shade sail/cloth section above the avairy (which seems to have helped a little), they have extra water containers, wet towels on the outside, regular water spraying and I hosed the sides of the avairy, inside and out. Nothing really made too much difference. They still all sat/lay there with their wings out and panting like crazy. I felt very sorry for them, but there was nothing else I could do. I also only have fans inside, and felt that because my room was still 35C it wouldn't help them too much to bring them inside. It sounds like you are doing all you can though, and bringing them inside if you need to would be fine. I also tried the ice blocks in the water, but they melted before I left the avairy. I don't think there is much more that you can do. Sorry again for the loss of you budgies, good luck with the comming days and Happy New Year to you also.

Keep her inside for a few days until you are sure she's okay :budgiedance:

Keep an eye on the others in case is isnt just the heat - we have weeks at a time of 40-45C and have never lost a bird, give the aviary and ground around it a hose in the middle of the day to cool the air temp a bit

Usually Budgies suffer with panting, holding their wings out etc with heat, but mostly they cope with it, of course if there is some other underlying condition, heat may finish them off. I would just be careful with the amount of spray you give them, as if it wets the floor area too much & this remains wet for any length of time this is very dangerous for spreading or breading problems.

:D I am so sorry, just keep trying to cool them down as per the previous EXCELLENT responses!
