Are They Actually Eating It?

It's so hot outside so I've retreated to the study with a fan (poor avairy birds :fear ) I've been feeding my 'kids' fruit and vegies and seem very keen to get stuck into it. It's very amusing as their faces get covered in it... egg and potato yesterday, banana today :fear . My question is I wonder how much they are actually eating? They drop a fair bit onto the ledge and back in the bowl and seem to be having a great time playing in it, just not sure on the consumption part of it (Laughing out loud). I'm not really worried though, as it does keep them busy and I'm sure something is going down their gobs as they nibble. Do others 'kids' do this also??? reminds me of when my nephew started eating solids... very phunny!!! Also, with this heat wave, can I put ice cubes in a try of water for them to play with? I haven't up to now, as I was worried my tiels would get their tongues stuck on them...ouch!!! Thanks all... keep cool xxx

Some of my budgies (Fizzy included) seem to be on a mission to destroy the veggies rather than eat them. :fear It's really quite funny to watch, and like you, i'm sure they eat *some* of it. :(Laughing out loud): The only downside is the MESS!

(Laughing out loud) :fear mine are all in the avairy, so I don't mind the mess. If it wasn't so bloody hot I'd be out their watching them... cracks me up !!! Will have to take a photo next time. Have you ever given them iced water?

Nope, but i'm not sure it would be good for them. It could be too cold for their crops... :fear

On really hot days I put icecubes in my birds drinkers :fear

Thanks Kaz... can they get to them though, or are they those tube ones... I'd be happy for them to play with them if their tongues don't get stuck on(like on Dumb and Dumber (Laughing out loud))

:ygbudgie: You can put ice cubes in any container, I even used to do it for my dog, even if they don't eat their veggies, you are doing your best. Just made turkey soup and put it out in the 3 inches of snow on the back porch to cool down. :fear

I put the icecubes in their tube drinkers. When you say about their tongues getting stuck, that would only happen with dry icecubes straight from the freezer...but if the icecubes are put in water it would be fine.

Thanks Phoebe... snow... mmm... love some of that right now (Laughing out loud)... Turkey soup, yum, yum, making me hungry.

i use the ice trick for alot of my animals too.. the dogs are even so spoilt as to be fed icy-poles during the extreme heat waves... one thing i found is to freeze the fresh fruit... they love how cold it is! ones i find work best for birds and rabbits (in the same avairy) are watermelon and corn... other than that an icey tray of water and grass they love also :fear
