Posted December 28, 200717 yr Hi All, My lovely boyfriend brought home some special little budgies for Christmas. They are a mixed bunch!! First, we have "BlueBoy". His wings are very pretty, they have no black on them, just the blue colour from his body. Is this a form or spangle or opaline or both? In the aviary at the store "BlueBoy" was kissing "BlueGirl", so my boyfriend brought her home too. Is she opaline? "Clippy" is next...the man at the bird store told my boyfriend he/she is a Violet Fallow, the photos don't show it very well, but she does have very violet feathers on her lower belly and near the base of her tail. She is called Clippy because had a clipped wing, I've never clipped a budgies wing before, how long will it take to grow back? Is fallow a dominant gene? Finally, we have EMO, he wasn't a Christmas present. I saw him at a bird store about a month ago, he is a striking bird, but his cere looked very 'messy'. The man at the bird store suggested against me buying him. He's 3 yrs old, so I thought I'd bring him home anyway and give him lots of TLC. His cere appears to be improving (more blue is showing through). Does anybody know what this is? I've looked up a bit on hypertrophy, but that seems to affect Hen's more than Cocks?? Also, he is quite happy in himself and has LOTS of condition on him!! He's a big bird! Would love to hear your thoughts! Happy new year! Lucy
December 28, 200717 yr they are awesum lookin birds but i dont no wat could be wrong with the lasst one could it be scalyface
December 28, 200717 yr Blueboy is an opaline spangle Bluegirl is a skyblue opaline Clippy would have to have red eyes to be a fallow. Does he or she ? Also looks a bit Texas clearbody to me, not fallow. But if red eyes then they are right about fallow. This one could be a hen or a cock ...until the cere clears up a little it could go either way. A very nice large Yellow face sky violet type 1 normal. I would treat for scalyface just in case and see what develops...boy or girl. Nice birds :bluebudgie:
December 28, 200717 yr They are all beautiful looking budgies, I especially like 'BlueBoy' :bluebudgie: .
December 28, 200717 yr Author Yes, Clippy has red eyes, so is a fallow. I'll have to do more research into Fallows! Thanks!
December 28, 200717 yr Agree with Kaz :bluebudgie: also I would keep in mind that Blueboy and Bluegirl might be siblings if from the the same store at the same time. Treat Emo for scaly face and the rest of the flock as you have them all in together.
December 28, 200717 yr Here's a similar fallow boy of mine ( soon to go and live with our member Libby )
December 28, 200717 yr aww! arent fallows gorgeous! your yellow faced violet looks like a hen to me... i have one in a cabinet who came to me with the same coloured cere - the scaley face and has since turned brown :bluebudgie: -- before -- after Edited December 28, 200717 yr by *libby*
December 28, 200717 yr Author Very interesting, I would have swore that the blue yellowface was a boy, because the colour of the cere not affected is quite blue, but seeing libby's photos makes me wonder. How do I treat scaleyface? Is a treatment available from bird stores or do I need to go to a vet clinic? Agree with Kaz :bluebudgie: also I would keep in mind that Blueboy and Bluegirl might be siblings if from the the same store at the same time. Thanks Nerwen, yes I had thought of that.
December 28, 200717 yr i treat scaleyface in my aviary with a dap on ointment availiable from most pet stores... the one we use is called scale and mite remedy made by avian science... although alot of other members use invermection i beleive it's called which only takes one drop on the back of the head... but it more pricey and i find the one i use more readily avaliable :bluebudgie:
December 28, 200717 yr I use the spot on ivermectin for all newly introduced birds while handling them. Spot on a once only treatment...too easy :bluebudgie: I also use the water soluble ivermectin for their drinking water once a month through summer and once every three month through the rest of the year. I have too many birds for ointments. The ivermectin spot on is $9 a small bottle but it would do hundreds of birds.
