Shade Sail Advice?

Featured Replies

Although it seems I'm living in the cold state at the moment, I'm thinking of putting up a shade sail over my avairy. It used to get some shad from a Eucalyptus tree next door, but it was removed because it was going to fall down. Although it hasn't been to hot as yet, I've noticed how hot the roof and walls are getting. The avairy already has two roofs... metal one and then a tilted laserlight one. Doesn't seem to make much difference though. Does anyone else use shade sails? Any advice? The avairy is right next to a storage shed and a tree, so I might have to use them to connect it up?!?! mmm :) still trying to figure that bit out...

We have just recently put a shadecloth section on top of the metal and laserlite roof of the existing birdroom with a gap for airflow. It made an immediate difference within minutes :)

Nice Kaz... What sort of gap are you talking... Wasn't sure how high I'd need it. Sounds like you NEED it over there though!!!!

We have a gap of about 6-8 inches. The shadecloth is attatched to a section of lattice ( because we had it already ).

Yesterday's was a scorcher !! and today was hotter I believe. I lost one budgie yesterday from the heat and have one hen eggbound also heat related. My husband lost a newly fledged canary youngster and we also lost the largest barraband chick in the heat yesterday. Today, so far, no losses....but today we are home and monitoring the situation and keeping all things cool. Yesterday we had to go out for part of the day due to Christmas celebrations.

Thanks for that Kaz. Sounds Bloody hot, you poor things!!! So sorry for your losses. I hope the egg bound hen pulls through and you don't loose any more. I'm now happy it's cooler here and will settle for 23 C. Keep Cool :)

So... 33 c today and hotter tomorrow. Dad and I put up a shade sail tonite. I'm not real happy with it, but the basic idea is there. I'll be interested to see how it goes tomorrow and then I'll be able to see what needs to happen. Will post pics when I'm happy. I cut my knee open a little (not real bad but it stung when I put betadine on it :fear I'm such a woose!!!) I also put a slight dint in the shed roof (next to the avairy), got attacked by a million ants (yes, I counted (Laughing out loud)) and got a very dirty a***. :hap: We also managed not to swear too much :hap:

Should I bring my tiels inside? Today is now 40C and it's gonna be hot untill tues at least. I don't have enough room for the budgies but I could manage Bert and Ernie. They aren't tame though and would prob have to catch them with a net. I know this would stress them out heaps... catch 22 I guess. My room is about 30C, so 10C cooler with an occolating? fan. Any thoughts??? If I was going to try and catch them I'd wait till tonite ot tomoz morn when it's cooler, but yeah, unsure what would be less stressfull

I would not chase, catch or stress any bird on a 40 degree day. They say that when the birds go to ground ona hot day to leave them and dont disturb them. Do all you can to keep their cage, or aviary or surroundings cool, but dont try catching them now that its hot already.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking... thanks. Just wanted to make sure I was doing the right thing. I'm water spraying, and have 1/2 shade sail done and the rest will be finished today/tonite (when it's a little cooler for dad and I). :fear Other than that I'm leaving them alone.
