Posted December 24, 200717 yr Hi I woke up this morning to go and check if I had any new chicks and sadly my 1st born one has died. It was 3 days old and I thought it was doing well. It was getting bigger and stronger each day. My question is when the parent feeds it and you can see it in the crop what should ot look like, you could see black spots and loooked like seeds. Shouldnt it be broken up a bit more. Could someone please tell me what I should be seeing, any pics would be great. Thanks and merry xmas.
December 24, 200717 yr Parents generally feed their newly hatched babies crop milk. A kind of juice from the seed they have eaten themselves. Some new parents or inexperienced parents do not get this right and feed a "mix" more suited to anm older chick. The specks ou saw might have been vegies ? ...not just seed. Be sure you have easy and good food available to the parents...soft food and vegies as well as plenty of fresh clean water and seed.
