Posted December 19, 200717 yr While brousing around this forum i learnt that the bands that are on the birds legs often have the year they hatched on them. I have 3 birds with bands and to my discust 2 of the 3 are over 10 years old - no wonder they are not breeding.... GRRRR!! . The 3rd budgie with a band is a wonderful breeder that I have had for about 2-3 years. (pictured - I have used a full sized photo to show his problem....) http://netsavvymums.com/personalpics/toe.jpg I caught him yesterday to take a look at the blue ring on his leg. There is no date on the ring . I then noticed that his inside rear toe is caught underneith the ring. I dont know if it's been like that all this time and I hadn't noticed, or if it's something that has just happened. I was very gentile, but I can't see any way that the ring can be moved to release the toe. Can the ring be removed??? it looks solid all the way around (no join) what do i do??? December 19, 200717 yr If the ring was fitted properly I cannot see how his toe can get back through the ring , To me seems impossible , I think more likely it was always like it . No problem though. You can cut the ring off with a pair of ring cutters , If you bought it from a breeder or know one, they might have a pair or your local vet should be able to do it . I just took another look at your picture , can you slide the ring up his leg but not over his knee and using a tooth picture flick his toe out from the ring . December 19, 200717 yr If you are unsure how to remove the ring it is best to take it to an avian vet or breeder in your area that can remove the ring. Their legs are so fragile.
December 20, 200717 yr Author Thanks for your replys guys I have tried to gently move the ring up but it doesn't go up high enough to release the toe. I dont want to use any force. I think your right and it looks like it might have been there all the time and poorly fitted in the first place. If this is the case will he be in pain when the ring is removed??? Im In Adelaide SA. If you know someone in Adelaides north that could help that would be great. Otherwise i will see if i can get into a vet.... know any vets that deal with birds in SA???? The local ones in my area (Gawler) dont really like it when i take in birds - they dont really know much about anything thats smaller than a rabbit (Laughing out loud). That is a problem with some vets today birds are just not their thing . Dogs and cats are their speciality unfortunatly , Im in NSW so cannot help sorry . You can however contact the BRASEA rep in South Aus , They may know of someone in your area , they are Barbara & John Fisher PH 08 82887936 . Hope it helps
December 20, 200717 yr In our FAQ section we do have an avian vet look-up tool that you can use, also if you call a regular vet in your area ask them questions to see if they are familar with birds, or an avian shop or breeder by you may assist. You can do a google too in your area to see what you come up with .
December 20, 200717 yr Sorry Liv. Thought you were local for some reason. Any local bird breeder worth their salt would help you cut that off. But be sure to use real legring cutters and cut it in two places so the ring falls away. A very negligent thing to do, put a ring on and not be sure the toe is freed. It will have made his toe work other than the way it should have by now. Better to free it from the legring now or else any future condition where his foot may swell would cause pain, if not causing an issue already.

Just get a tooth pick & place it under the toe joint & the ring & pick the toe out,Seeing as the toe has been under the ring for at least 2 yrs, it will sit in that position, pointing up the leg when you get it out.The toe is flexable & it should come out with outany trouble, Edited August 16, 200816 yr by **Liv**

I just gave it a try...I rapped him in a black cloth to help calm him (he is semi tame) and I clipped the claw as short as I could without getting the vein... I still couldnt get the toe free. I couldn't get the ring up high enough to get the toothpick under. I would say ring cutters are is what is needed... I will set too and find some one with some cutters... can I buy some??? Or is it something for experienced hands??? Thanks so much for all your help... liv

Some are better than others and the secret is they have to be sharp and work well. It has to be cut in two places so it falls away. Any other way will make the leg bleed pretty badly as the metal is very sharp. I do not suggest any other kind of tool as the space you will have to work with is very tight. Can you trace a budgie breeder nearby who may assist or a local budgie club member who can do it for you ? Edited December 21, 200717 yr by KAZ
December 21, 200717 yr I'm sure if you find a breeder in your local area they will help you as helping others with budgies is why many people join a club , the job you have in mind could be done by yourself with the correct tools but it is better done by someone who has done it before and would be easier if there were more than 1 person doing the job. Most Budgie clubs are in the phone book give them a call and see if they can help Bubbles.
December 21, 200717 yr Author I have found my nearest bugie club in SA.... Budgerigar Society Of South Australia Incorporated 17 Vine St Surrey Downs SA 5126 ph: (08) 8288 7936 It's 1 hour drive from me so I may not be able to get him there until after Christmas. I dont know any breeders in my area who are professional. Most are like me and breed budgies for fun. There is a bird breeder/shop which is about 15 mins from me. I purchased him from there, but i am feeling like his quality of birds is getting bad. I have observed birds for sale there with seriously bad mites etc... I dont really want to take my boy into this environment. yuk!! He is not in any visible discomfort, which is why I probably havn't noticed his toe until now. I feel sooo bad that its gone untreated for so long Edited December 21, 200717 yr by **Liv**

They may be able to give you details of someone near you who can help.
December 21, 200717 yr do a google search too you can put in key words such as budgie breeder (then put your area) and see what you come up with, look in the paper also for those who sell budgies around you and you can call get a feel for them and see if they are crediable. In my area they are few and in between the private good breeders but I am sure they are there . Good luck and don't blame yourself.
