Posted December 18, 200717 yr Just wondering if it's normal for a baby budgie to act as a contortionist? Goldie will sit on the side of the cage then flip herself around in a sumersult without moving her legs, so when she's twisted herself around her legs are the wrong way around if you get what I'm saying....could it be possible she's double jointed in the legs? I was in a panic as I was worried she would break her legs but she keeps doing it! Does anyone else have this problem? What do you suggest I do?

YES its a "budgie thing" and they all do weird stuff like that. ENJOY
December 18, 200717 yr Author Oh thank god! I was starting to worry alot! I've just been sitting with my hand in her cage, we're hand taming her, and she had one leg on my finger and the other on the side of the cage and she did it! Wow it's really weird! She's now hanging upside down from the top of the cage, so I guess I had better get used to all these funny little antics or I'll end up a nervous wreck! Edited December 18, 200717 yr by newtobudgies
December 19, 200717 yr Sounds like my Blue, he gets in a corner with his legs spread and then pushes his head down between his legs and comes up again. That and he hangs upside down for hours at a time. I had to learn that 9 times out of 10 unless he is makes noises that sound like he is in pain he is enjoying himself.
December 19, 200717 yr Sounds like some of my gang. I cringe every time they do it, it just looks so uncomfortable!
December 19, 200717 yr If you ever get to see budgerigars in the wild where they flock in their thousands you will see all these things as natural movements . Ive seen over 1000 budgies try and land in one single tree to roost for the night it was an amazing site , there where budgies trying to land in all sorts of ways they were hanging upside down twisted , dangling by one foot trying to keep their spot , there were budgies on budgies it was chaos. Something would spook them and they would all fly away again only to return and do it all again , somehow they eventually found their comfy spot and that was where they stayed , I dont know how they slept cause some birds were hanging upsidedown , But thats our budgies weird wonderful birds. Enjoy.
December 19, 200717 yr I had a budgie once that used to hang upside down to sleep. I saw it by torchlight one night and thought it had got caught and hung. But it was asleep that way and often slept hanging upside down from the perch
December 20, 200717 yr Before I put him in the aviary, my Smudge used to sleep in the top corner of the cage, hanging on to both sides with his legs spread. It looked very uncomfortable and at first I thought something was wrong but he kept doing it... so I figured he LIKES it!! Sprite used to do somersaults around his perch when he was young.... so cute! They can be quite strange! :feedbirds:
December 31, 200717 yr My budgie Beaky does exactly the same thing. Sometimes I have to go over and check because he looks, from outside the cage, as though he has his head through the bars. I have freaked out so many times!! I really can't see how they can be comfortable in some of the positions they get themselves into, but hey, whatever keeps them happy. Thanks for the laugh Kathym1977
