URGENT HELP!!!!

 

My budgies are puffing up, appear to have soiled vents (faeces not normal) and dieing on me. It appears to be happening quite quickly.

 

Have lost 2 of my best ones and another looks like it may be gone by morning.

 

Some have normal faeces atm.

 

I put them on an antibiotic Sunday night but that doesn't appear to be working.

 

I'm thinking maybe cocci.

 

I only had 10 budgies to begin with and have already lost 2 and I say more will go soon.

 

What can I do?

What a dilemma

One we've all faced i'm sure.Firstly you need to know what you are treating your birds for,and the only way to do that is to find a bird vet and take him one of the dead birds for autopsy or maybe a poo sample,otherwise you will never know, and there are so many diseases with the same symptoms it's not funny.Don't introduce anymore birds while yours are sick and remember when your birds do get better to always quarantine them for a month or so first.Hope this helps

Yes it been caused because of a quarantine issue (we live and learn the hard way). One of the last birds I got and the one I've had the longest have died so far.

 

I read the post about raspberry cordial and as not able to get an cocci medication tonight I decided to get some raspberry syrup (25% raspberry juice) and give it a try. Do you think this will do anything? (even if just a pick me up)

Neither has mine. Glass isnt a necessary part of a hospital cage. Your birds should be in a warm cage. At the very least a cage with a warm lamp shining into it.

okay, mine the glass panel at the front is missing (was broken by previous owner) so will see what I can do to cover it up and get the sickest bird into it.

Just use a cage with a lamp and all birds with poopy bottoms need to be in it.

okay the worst one is still alive and his stool is very watery (looks a light green as the white and green sections are mixing). Some appear to have normal stools and some have greenish on some feathers.

PS the two I've lost were my best male (he was a normal large Grey, recently bought) and my good harlequin hen that I've had for 12 months and was just at breeding age

I would be contacting the person you bought them off to see if they ave had any problems in the last 12 months. It may help.

I always carry a sulpher based medicine for this reason , you can buy it from all pet shops , called sulpher D, if you have sick birds or deaths give it in the drinking water straight away as this can save some lives or prolong deaths while you get time to have a vet diagnose your problem . Goodluck with your birds.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank those who gave me advice recently regarding my birds. It was greatly appreciated.

 

The update is that after putting the birds on supher D and puting the worst 2 in a hospital cage, the birds all now appear healthier. The diahreah has stopped and the faeces look normal, the normal green that was all puffed up and not eating is now eating and more active.

 

So far I have only lost the two best ones at the begining.
