Posted December 17, 200717 yr I noticed today when i brought out one of my baby budgies from the breeding box when it flapped it's wings about 5-6 feathers fell out and the younger baby is worse, is it the mother pruning/preening them too much? shes in there alot lately with the babies i brought a product today if anyone owns this product or has one similar how long does it take to take effect? i dont want grown dwellers or i would of just got some quails, i prayed the box the babies and the mother and father, his got a crusty cene i dont know if that could be due to the loss of feathers, it could be a number of things, they're about 5weeks old.
December 17, 200717 yr Loss of feathers like that sounds like you have french moult babies. Dont use the spray on them ...they are too young and you havent identified the problem properly yet. If feathers fall out that easily at the age they are then you most likely have french moult babies. Please post some clear pictures so we can see.

December 17, 200717 yr You will lose the flight feathers and tail feathers soonest with french moult. Often at a time when they are fledging. Mostly they keep their body and head feathers.BUT some are more severe and lose them from head and body too. some babies go into a shock moult for various reasons and some lose feathers for nutritional reasons too. You will know if yours continues to lose all the flights over the next couple of days. Edited December 17, 200717 yr by KAZ
December 17, 200717 yr Kaz is right looks like you may have French moult, if your lucky most of them may grow their feathers back in some weeks or months. I had some trouble this year, but most recovered, but that depends on how severe your infection is. It’s caused by a virus, after some months, the experts say most bird become immuned.

December 17, 200717 yr I have a few in the aviary that didnt recover...but they live in there and use ladders.
December 17, 200717 yr Author I have a few in the aviary that didnt recover...but they live in there and use ladders.Oh good idea, we had a ladder mite put it back up Only reason we removed it because we had a rat hanging around the avairy at the time Thanks Kaz
December 17, 200717 yr Like Kaz said they seem to live quite happily in the avairy & learn to climb up the wire, most seem healthy in other ways, or you can give them away as pets to friends. There's the slight chance that they may become carriers, but after reading up on FM I'm not sure that's a bad thing to have a source, especially of low virulent infection, apparently there are much more virulent strains that kill birds & cause dead in shell, so a milder form that imparts some immunity to your flock could be a good idea…but that’s just my personal reasoning. Not something recommended by “experts”. Edited December 17, 200717 yr by Norm
December 18, 200717 yr Be very careful what you put on your budgies.Your vet should be able to supply you with cydectin or ivermectin(same thing) and you apply one drop to the back of the neck every few months.I think drops are better as there is no chance of inhalation, and you want to be sure it's mites and the mother is'nt a feather plucker, you can take a feather into the vet and get him/her to look at it under the microscope.I have had feather pluckers and mostly it's due to boredom, spending lots of time in the nest box.You can try hanging a small short piece of chain in the nest box for her to play with, make sure it's not too fine and she or the babies can't strangle themselves
