Posted December 8, 200717 yr I Have Three Budgies All About Three Mounths Old.I Would Really Like To Handle Them But When I Put My Hand In They Just Fly Away. The Cage Is Quite Small So It Makes It Hard To Try And Grab Them. Plz Plz Help
December 8, 200717 yr I assume you would like to tame them and grabbing them is probably not the best thing to do. They see your hand is a predator's mouth when you grab so they will fly away. If you would like to tame all three you may think about wing clipping just in the beginning so you have more control of the situation. Here is an excellent article from our FAQ about taming your budgie there are many different ideas that can be used with a sole budgie or more. Click here to Read
December 8, 200717 yr I'm not as knowledgeable as some of the guys on this forum, so they'll probably be able to offer better advice. However what I've done in the passed is: *Firstly, don't try to grab them straight away. *Let them get used to you, sit by their cage and talk to them softly, or do other activities by their cage like reading. *When they're not so 'flighty' begin putting your hand in the cage and letting them get accustomed to it. *From there, you can try getting them to perch on your finger by gently running your finger down their chest applying a bit of pressure on their belly to get them to step up. (It's also handy to get them to learn the "Step Up" command.) *When they're confident doing that, trying moving them around the cage on your finger slowly. *Then begin holding them at the cage door, progress to holding them just outside the cage (If they do not have their wings clipped i.e can fly, make sure the room is budgie-proof first) And remember to persist, sometimes it can take months for a budgie to begin to trust you (example being my Bubbles), but it is worth it in the end. Good Luck :budgiedance:
December 9, 200717 yr I would find a treat that they love and introduce it on your hand then its down to patience and win their confidence . You can also try taking out their food at say lunch time and then that afternoon feed them by hand when they are hungry , you have to get their trust and patience is the key . Goodluck
December 10, 200717 yr :ygbudgie: No, grabbing is not a good thing, please read the FAQS and good luck, they are young so you should do just fine.
