Second Budgie.........yes Or No ?

Hi there,

I got my fiest budgie about 7 weeks ago, and he was 5 weeks old when i got him.... over the last 7 weeks he began to start to trust me, but still a little scared i guess......... he freely flies out of his gage to come and collect gum leaves etc, but still doesnt really like sitting on my finger for too long.......

Anyway, i went to the pet shop the other day, and saw this really beautiful budgie.its all yellow and has red coloured eyes........... its only a baby they told me, but hes soooo friendly.........hes in a small cage of about 25 budgies, and hes the only one that doesnt fly away when i pat him through the cage.......he nibbles on my finger, and is really nice........

he seems more friendlier than my other budgie which ive had for 7 weeks now, and vertially spent the whole day with him every day for 7 weeks

Im really want to get this new budgie since hes so friendly and beautiful, but i read that getting a second budgie will slow, or even stop the bonding and talking with the 1st budgie i have.........

But i was thinking, what if i got this new budgie, but put him in his own cage...........

would that still stop the bonding/ talking with my other budgie, since they will be able to see and hear each other................. or is it only a problem if they are in the same cage ? ?

advice needed pls.......

thanks

Jason

:ygbudgie: Hi Jason, must be short here as have to run off, BUT if you do get another budgie, the new one must be kept away and in quarantine for a month before they get together. As to having 2 budgies together, check out our FAQs regarding the pros and cons and do have a read of all the other great stuff as well! Your guy is still pretty young so keep up the training and give them some time........

i'm hand taming two budgies for x-mas presents for my cousins atm (by request of their mother) and i've found it attanable to do... i find it easiest to keep them in seperate cages... if you're having trouble with your budgie flying off your finger and so on an effective alternative to clipping their wings it taping them (only on the primaries) It stops them jumping off once they learn they can't fly when they do so and throws off their balance without permanently stopping their flying.... later on down the track they'll sit on you without wings taped as they'll trust you. but i will warm you to be careful when they're first taped as they will TRY to fly and can fall hard if up high... so it's easiest to sit down with them and get them to step up over and over with the taped wings hope that helps :)

Hi Jason,

As Phoebe mentioned, they're are pro's and con's to consider.

I found that having two or more budgies in a cage didn't particularly hinder the taming process, infact two of my newest budgies, Pixie & Gizmo, are proving fairly easy to tame.

They have just finished quarantine and joined my other 7 budgies, and after seeing them crawling all over me, it was as if they seemed to think "well if they can do it, so can we!" (Laughing out loud).

However, I also believe it has alot to do with the budgies personality, some prefer to sit with me all day, while some like to socialise with the other budgies and pay me a visit when it suits them.

I've also found wing clipping to be a great help, though I don't get them clipped for taming per say, but rather safety reasons.

:)
