Posted December 4, 200717 yr okay I know that sounds funny because most cage budgie are to fat and need to lose weight. Harley dropped some condition after Queenie died, the vet said it was morning and we gave him lots of TLC (well the best you can do with a grumpy old man) he picked up and that was fine. Then with the move to the bigger cage, Blue being so hyperactive and making Harley chase him around the cage, Harley's belief that he can fly (he can't but it takes alot out of him to try) he has dropped weight again. Mum took him to the vets today for me as I am at work and the vet said to fatten him up he is fine just getting far more exercise then he has had in years. Because of the amount of "outside time" blue gets he is a good weight and the girls are young so the vet told my mum to put them on an "fattening diet" for a while to help build them up a bit and bring them back in a month for a weigh in. Issue my mother said thanks and walked out the door and never thought to ask the man what a "fattening diet" is. *bangs head against desk* So any ideas would be great At the moment they get Budgie mix I buy from a feed store Fresh fruit and veg's (Harley LOVES his snow peas and grapes) Pellets (but I think they just throw them around and not eat them) Cooked egg whites about once a week mixed in their seeds Millet seed branches Honey sticks or bells Is there something else I should add to to their diet to help Harley put on a little weight? Any help would be great Edited December 4, 200717 yr by Angelic Vampyre
December 5, 200717 yr Author I am not sure to tell you the truth, I just remember as a kid mum would boil eggs the dogs would get the yolks and the birds would get the whites. If they can have yolks then I will give it to them at the moment my dogs get the egg yolks so guess they can just miss out from now on.
December 5, 200717 yr The birds should have the whole egg, ( for protein and calcium ) ....mashed up. Dry the shell in the oven and crush it up finely and give them that too. You can add some finesliced greens like bokchoy, grated carrot, corn kernels, birdseed, etc and breadcrumbs for added weightgain or commercially purchased egg and biscuit added ........and if they have more perches and less exercise they will gain weight .....for the dogs, I give them an egg flip twice weekly....milk or milk substitute, raw eggs mixed through and a tablespoon or two of codliver oil. For quantities, I used about a litre of milk, 1-2 eggs and a tablespoon of codliver oil. I always did it when breeding Dobermans years ago and even now with my cavaliers. You will notice a difference in the dogs coat within days Edited December 5, 200717 yr by KAZ
December 5, 200717 yr Author (Laughing out loud) I will try that with my dogs! Thanks for that and also thanks for the info on the eggs for the birds. Dad and I just re did the cage today (he is making a tin cap for one side of it) so I have added some more branches cause I thought that the less flight space they had the bigger they will get! Will keep you updated at the next weigh in!
December 5, 200717 yr If you really need to put weight on them feed them oats , Hulled oats even better then they dont have to dehull the seed, Less excerize more eating = more weight.

January 29, 200817 yr If you want you can mix in about 5% oats to your mix and feed all the time Dry , I dont give mine oats unless breeding , They get it dry , also soaked at times and sometimes I mix in some oils depending on time that I have . Pet stores should have oats or try a farm supplies.

January 29, 200817 yr Thanks hun ...so for a couple of budgies, one egg a week is plenty? Yes...along with the usual extra vegies
January 30, 200817 yr Well, tried egg on my two this morning...mixed in everything you suggested but they wouldn't touch it :yellowhead: fussy birdies...if at first you don't succeed... try again... Edited January 30, 200817 yr by lisa
January 31, 200817 yr Author Mine are not to sure about the egg yolk but the whites they will eat. Also you can add them in your homemade honey sticks/cups. Harley has taken to the oats and I am pretty sure that he has put weight on, going back to the vet in about 2 weeks so will know for sure then.
January 31, 200817 yr Try boiling the egg for 20mins and then cool in the water. It gives a better texture to the birds.
