Posted December 3, 200717 yr I have just started mixing my own seed , It works out cheeper and havent been happy with the premix as the drought has made some of the seed suppliers putting in seed that the budgies wont eat or cannot eat (sorgum) , Im thinking it also gets the weight of the seed up quicker. So im mixing 40% canary ,40% french white millet and 20% panican . Was wondering what other breeders are doing with their seed mixing or premixed?
December 3, 200717 yr I buy premixed budgie breeder which seems to be millet and canary. But for right now the breeding birds are mostly eating the millet out of that blend. I will look into the costs of mixing my own as you suggest. Cheers Kaz
December 3, 200717 yr Hi Kaz I worked out I saved $20 per 50 kilos compared to the premixed I was buying , The premix was the premium brand and mix though, but i did a seed count after i mixed it and they were very close to being the same blend , I also noticed the seed I mixed was larger in size per grain . You can only try!

December 3, 200717 yr Like you say we are experiencing lots of problems with seed, due to the continuing drought. Increasing price being one. At the present time I’m getting my seed from two sources, our club is buying from a grower here in NSW, but he has advised us that his Canary seed crop failed this year & I have noticed that the last batch of seed didn’t contain much Canary seed. I am also getting from the local store a commercial mix, but there are rumours going around that this seed wont sprout any more, as it’s been irradiated, as most of the seed is imported from overseas. The Canary seed in this mix is much larger. My birds still seem to be going well & there’s not much we can do at this time. I used to buy straight grains & mix seed myself, but I haven’t tried of late, but in this area it doesn’t seem to be available any more.
December 3, 200717 yr I mix my own. 50% Canary 20% White french 20% Jap 5% Panicum. I mix 20kgs at a time and throw in a handful of Niger.

December 4, 200717 yr I haven't had any problems but it has been a couple of weeks since I got my last supplies. I have been lucky at the last two club meeting and have won 1 bag (20kg) of seed at both meetings.

December 4, 200717 yr They are millets Zebra. White French, Japanese and Panicum are all types of millet with different nutrient levels. Niger is a oil seed.
