Hello everyone

My name is debbie and i have had budiges for 6 years now in a avairy. at the moment i have 6 adult budgies which have nested the last three years but on monday one of my females flew out of the avairy leaving four babies behind, so i have joined your forum to find out as much information as i can on how to raise them. they are about 2 to 3 weeks old i think but one is not growing much. i will try to add a picture and see if it works. i have never be involved in a forum before.

I have had the babies for 6 days now and they are all still alive so i must be doing something right, but they take a lot of work.

i would love to hear from folk who have hand raised babies and tell me their experiences.

xx

Deb

Welcome :(, good to have you here on the boards.

Here is an article about handrearing budgies BBC FAQ Article , I hope it helps a bit.

What many people will do will put the chicks with another breeding pair who are raising chicks around the same age.

I know members with more experience will be coming on in a couple hours as right now for many who breed it is night time. You may want to PM Norm or he may see this post as he is a breeder with experience too.

Keep us updated, would love to see pics.

Hi Deb, Need to know a few things.

Are you colony breeding or have the pairs in separate breeding cages?

Is the cock bird attending to the chicks?

Have you tried to feed them any hand raising food?

Hello Daz if you look at our photos ( in my last post) you will see we have a big (2.4m sqr) avary with all the birds in together with 6 guinea pigs :( so that would be a colony i suppose. The mother would not allow the male past the nest's front door and she was feeding them herself. So went to a local pet shop and bought a heating cord to go around the ice cream container we have them in, and we are feeding them a high protein rearing formula we are advised to use.In the 6 days we have had them inside, 3 have been little pigs, eating until they nearly popped, and one - the youngest- came in but got very sick and stopped eating. pretty soon it's crop stopped emptying and its belly turned dark red like a bruise, and then he started passing blood, BUT the last two days he has begun to pick up and is looking for food and is pooing normally again. Looks like we may have saved the little life with some TLC, but he does have a rather extended belly. Thanks for the reply!

Hey there, Mick & Deb :bluebudgie:

Sounds like you have it all well in hand and going fine. Not much I can add, as I believe you are doing all you can. You search for the knowledge you don't already have and are two or three steps ahead to ward off any issues. Very sensible and smart. Best of luck with these little guys, and I hope you stick around for awhile. We have a great bunch of people on here. Photos of your brood very welcome as everyone here just LOVES photos of others birds. Enjoy :(

i've had some who have done the "bruised" looking effect you described and the crop slowing down... they turn a darker red i beleive from lack of hydration and then start to become skinny looking. if his crop it back processing you've done well :( keep up the awesome work... it sounds liek you're a wonderful foster mother :bluebudgie:

hello and welcome, they are good looking chix, hope all goes well, im hand feeding 4 right now to, not much sleep but their worth it, sounds like your doing good,

juliet
