My First Hen To Attack Her Mate

Just this morning I heard some squabbling coming from the breeding cabinets down stairs. It seemed to be going on for too long and thinking the worst I raced downstairs to see what was going on. The cock bird was bleeding from the top of his beak - I didnt know what to think. Had he attacked the chicks inside the nest or did the hen attack him? I very slowly opened the lid of the nest box prepared to see some sore and sorry chicks but all was well in there, phew! So it had to be that the hen had attacked him. And while I was there looking at them, they started fighting in front of me, so I quickly got him out of there and have left the hen to rear them, will be keeping a very close eye on the chicks. What makes then suddenly turn on each other??

maybe the hen found out he'd cheated before they got into their cabinet   haha

it is hard to say what happened and why they do that budgies can get that why

maybe she became overprotective and decided she didn't want him around at that time

if she is a first time mom she could be insecure or if he is a first time dad

I am sure someone with more experience will come on such as Kaz, Daz etc...

I would keep an eye on the hen and her mate and if you see more squabbling you may have to separate them and let the hen simply feed them only if she won't accept the male's help.

Sometimes this happens when the cock wants to climb in the box and mate with the hen well before she is finished raising chicks.

Elly, I separated the birds straight away cause I knew she would kill him if I left them together. I have left the hen to raise them on her own (that'll teach her!)

I had the same trouble just awhile ago Jenene & my pair were on their second batch & had been getting on well, it’s hard to tell what starts it off. My pair had a large brood so I put the three largest chicks with Dad & left the others with Mum, they are all in the aviary now.

I was thinking that but didn't type it because I couldn't remember if that is what the breeders do since I don't breed I was remembering from memory. I agree I wouldn't chance it myself.

How have the birds been?

All is well thanks Elly, the hen is feeding the chicks on her own and is doing a good job. Dad is recovering in a separate cage. Will be keeping an eye on the hen to make sure she doesnt turn on the chicks!
