today i decided to clean my nest box, it was stinky, the oldest chick is 9 days old youngest is 4 days, i took them out to check the bands stayed on, #3 chick lost his, couldnt find it, so ill do it again, anywhay i took all old powdered poop out and gave some pine bedding, she did throw it all out before the eggs,

well now she wont go back in, she keeps looking through the hole, the babys have cried but i checked and their is still food in all crops, its been an hour, he did go in once, i also while she was out [her choice on the play stand]gave a spray bath, hes been horking food on her head and she was having a bad hair day, [ill post the funny makeover stuff somewhere else] how long do i wait for her,let them cry awhile , im set up to hand feed if i need, but the youngest is really small yet, my boy i was worried about is doing better with rest 2 times a day, but now i think i screwed them up, ????she is perched just looking in??? i guess i should of left them alone,

You say pine bedding, what do you mean, wood shavings or pine needles from pine trees. It sounds like your birds are just scared because you have changed their conditions too much. They will probably get over it, after a few hours. I wouldn’t be thinking of hand feeding at this stage, you could remove the material that has made them scared.

sorry i meant pine wood chips, they know what they are, she threw em all out before, but then chewed the box up and picked out feathers for them, the boy has just gone in, dont know if hes feeding, they still have some food in crops, by the way beaker is doing good with the rest time in the other cage, much calmer, thanks,

Maybe you just put more than usual, if he has gone in I wouldn't worry too much, just keep an eye on them. Best of luck, I'm glad he has been better with the rest.

I agree with Norm. Too soon to panic. She will most likely go in soon as the dad is. When you clean out the nest box always do it quickly with as little disturbance as possible and little time taken. Let us know how it goes, but it should be fine.

it took almoast 2 hours, shes back in, all is well, i will stop posting in panic now, the bedding i put in before she layed eggs she threw out, i just needed to get all the powdered poop out, and thought somthing softer than rough wood would be appreciated, what do i know, but she fed and left the bedding, it was getting smelly in there, once she was dry and groomed, even though still a bad hairdoo, all is good, thanks,

“once she was dry & groomed”

Did you wash the mother as well as clean the nest? If that is true no wonder it took her hours to be game to go back…that would have been a little too much all at once, I have never washed a Budgie but if you did, one thing at a time would have been better. Anyway sounds like it turned out okay in the end…we learn by our experiences.
