rainbow nicely put but how do you know they were not nervous when they could not fly and i am sorry but i must disagree where you say they are easier to tame cause they can not fly. the toilet and kitchen ? close a door. it does not matter whether a bird is a avery bird or not it is still a bird

Oh PyscoFalcon, that is so sad about your parrot. Obviously whoever clipped your birds' wings had no idea what they were doing. (There is a different clip for each type of bird, and the age and weight of the bird and how adept they already are at flying needs to be taken into account also.) I would bet an improper wing trim was the cause of your bird's frustration. They should be able to glide to the floor, not drop like a stone. They should just not be able to gain much lift. I agree the birds shouldn't be that scared in the first place, but the fact is that in pet stores the smaller birds are not accustomed to being handled on a regular basis.

I also agree that there are dangers to having a bird that is unable to gain lift, but if you are interacting with them while they are out, being sat or stepped on shouldn't be one of them. In my house, there is no door to close off the kitchen from the rest of the house. Actually, it is pretty open, and from the room where the birds live (my living room) they can access the upstairs, downstairs, dining room, kitchen, and hallway because there are no doors to block them out. They like to fly in a circle from the living room, through the dining room, into the kitchen, and back into the living room. The babies have pretty much figured it out, but I still have to follow them when they leave the room and make sure they can make it back until they know what they're doing. At first I had to have someone else with me before I let them out because I could not run upstairs and be in the kitchen at the same time They are fast learners, and don't go upstairs anymore. Even so, I just spent over an hour trying to convince all the babies it was time to go back in their cage so I could get something else done, and they were in one room the whole time. Unless you have a LOT of patience it can be frustrating. I finally just sat on the floor and laughed at myself. I think they were laughing at me too!

Do you have an aviary? I get the impression most people here do and the birds don't live in the house.

No door to the kitchen? How do you stop harmful chemicals, smoke and cooking smells from making them ill?

But there out all day - putting them back is simple, they step onto my hands and I put them away. Most of the time there already back in and half asleep by the time I go to put them back for the night.

 

Wing clipping makes birds more scared of hands - not easier to tame.

lol - I don't think I've ever been in a house that had a door to the kitchen. If you have one you are lucky.

 

I like your aviary. Sometimes I wish I could have an outdoor one but it gets too cold here in the winter. Then I think we would miss each other if they weren't in the house. They are my buddies. I can't leave mine out all day unsupervised...it's good you have a bird-proof room for them. If I had an extra room I would just make the whole room into an aviary and they could be out all the time.

 

As far as harmful chemicals and such, as far as I know there aren't any. I don't use non-stick cookware or burn candles, the stove vents to the outside, and regular cooking smells don't/shouldn't bother them. I'm pretty careful about stuff like that. But you have to be when you are owned by budgies, right?

Have you ever had your budgies wings clipped? If you get them from a pet store, your budgie's wings are already clipped. Don't clip the wings yourself. have a vet speacilast do it. If you've had the wings clipped correctly, youd know they dont acctullay clip the wings. Just the flight feathers, and very slightly at that!

i have visited the breeder who my pet shop gets thier birds from, its great.you can get handreared young and everything, the staff at the shop ahndle all the animals regularly to keep them tame and do not clip them! good birds from there

the only reason i clip my budgie's wings is because i take her with me everywhere and she likes to be outside. i clip my parrots wings because i'd shoot myself in the head if i had to watch $1200 fly out my window. unlike with budgies, it doesn't matter if you have a screen on the window because a parrot can plow through it like it wasn't even there. funny story-- at work we had a woman schedule a wing clipping appointment for her macaw and she called us 5 minutes before her appointment and said "he just flew out the window---i'll go to the appointment if i ever catch him again" what a horrible loss...

i think that if the bird is a pet and you dont want it to fly away then you should clip its wings until it becomes tame. I, personally have tried clipping the wings but i like to watch them fly so i leave them long now

a tame bird will still fly away

I would just like to say that this topic is very one sided. I personally don't have a problem with wing clipping as long as it isn't really severe. The bird can still fly, they just can't fly up. If your bird just flops to the floor then the feathers haven't been clipped correctly. Having the feathers trimmed can help keep your bird out of trouble.

Doesn't always stop them flying up! My budgie had her wings done, and she flew away quite easily... and they were only just recentlyu done too...

I agree too because as some of you know I'm going to get my budgie's wings clipped this half term and I don't think it's wrong aslong as you only trim a reasonable amount off.

Tequilabudgie- My mother had an Eclectus for almost thirty years, but he died a few years ago He was definitely the most exciting (yet challenging) pet bird we've ever owned!

And, just my peice- my budgie Peekaboo's wings are clipped, because the store wouldn't let any of their pet parrots leave the store without having their wings clipped first for safety and ease of training, etc. Peekaboo definitely wouldn't have needed to be clipped for taming- she's been tame since day one, thankfully.

While I'd really love to have Peekaboo full-flighted and soaring about the house, my father definitely WOULDN'T He absolutely, flat-out refuses to let Peekaboo free-fly in the house, and since she's out of her cage alllll day long... that's not going to happen. It's also a MAJOR safety issue because we have ceiling fans going all day long and well... ceiling fans+budgies= !!!Also, my younger brother, being eight years old, is very irresponsible and is constantly running about the house and coming and going throughout the house with his friends... I can just see it already... all it would take is him leaving a door open and it's bye-bye Peekaboo...

So, although Peekaboo's wings are clipped, she can still fly clear across the room and gain about 3 feet of vertical height, and she's perfectly happy... not to mention SAFE!

I'm trying to find a way to let her be full-flighted while keeping everyone happy and making sure she'd be safe, but I'm not coming up with any ideas right now...

I don't really like it...but alfie has her wings clipped because when she got home she was very stressed and wouldn't calm down. She was flinging herself around the cage and hitting her head on the perchs and smashing into the walls. After 10 mintutes she still hadn't stopped so i rang the vet and they told me to clip one of her wings.It stopped her but she was really frustrated because she couldn't fly. It's the first and last time ive ever clipped wings. I did what the vet said. She can fly quite far :fear

 

SO I think it depends on the situation. Some budgies (like my friends) have no sense of direction and is continasly flying into walls!

Its sad when someone can get such a small creature, and put some sissors or clippers to the most precious things it has. I dont understand any reason for it.

If they dont want a bird to fly, why choose a bird?

I do understand some safety issues with it, but would you want it done to you, if you were the bird?

I agree donna, birds where given this wounderful gift of flight, its wrong when someone takes it away for there own means and gains.

 

I love seeing my birds flying around the house - although half the time they're on the floor running around like little dogs!!!

I agree. I think it's cruel to take away a natural instinct like that. It's like chopping off someone's leg so that they'll spend more time with you. I will NEVER clip a budgie's wing or any bird's wing.

 

It's so sad when i go into pet shops and i see a budgie with it's wings'clipped. Ifeel so sorry for it.

 

they can still fly but not as well and its much harder work, i love the way my two swoop, dive and play while flying.

I'm personally against wing clipping, but if anyone chooses it for their bird, then please, please. please get it done proffessionally.

Claire, i think we are close, you mentioned a pet shop once, i visit occasionally, in waterlooville.

Your birds are lovely.

I'm feeling bad enough Graham has hurt his wing and cannot fly, but he really seems happy enough. The signs are all very promising though, i the past couple of days he has actually used his wings to get places. Not far, but enough to show me some hope!
