Posted November 14, 200717 yr Hi all, newish to this budgie thing and brand new to your website. Have got 6 adult birds (2 males and 4 females) as well as 4 babies from 5 eggs. Was told by a friend to provide egg and biscuit mix "to help the parents". My problem is this - who am I providing it for the parents or the babies? How do I provide it and where? I have tried making it up damp for the parents and leaving it as a dry mix as well to no avail. Do I even need to do this? My babies range from a few weeks old to a month, all thriving so far. Sorry if this seems dumb but really not sure what to do and want to do the right thing. By the way mine adore silverbeet too, can't get enough of it. Any help would be great.
November 14, 200717 yr Providing soft food of some description helps parents feed their babies quickly. Egg and biscuit is one of the ways, but can often be made from sweet biscuits and can be slightly detrimental depending on the brand and type. Smell it...if it smells like milk arrowroot biscuits then it has come from discard biscuit company products.Budgies if not used to a variety of foods often will not try new things. Although many breeding birds will eat and try new foods due to need to feed their babies well.YES it is the parents you feed and not the babies. If you can make life easier for the mum and dad ...nutritionally....it all goes to help the babies.Corn on the cob, silver beet, grated carrot, soft soaked wheat and grains, defrosted frozen mixed vegies, some wholegrain bread mushed up with water...it all helps. We have some soft food recipes on our forum. I will try and find them for you :grbud:...................here we gohttp://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index....showtopic=14546
November 14, 200717 yr Like Kaz says, bird often take some time to learn new foods, just give them a little at a time & remove any uneaten after a few hours, provide it in a small separate dish... I use plastic bottle lids, as it contains egg which can go off in hot weather especially. But the egg content gives the birds more protein & variety than can be obtained in just dry seed.
