Black Seeds In Canary Food?

Featured Replies

Yesterday I bought a canary mix, as they didn't have the good budgie mix I normally buy. I remember reading that canary mix is okay for budgies, but I don't know if they put the same types of seed in canary mix here. There is not the list of ingredients, so I don't know the name of the black seeds, but they are round, smaller then millet and black. Do you think it okay?

Thanks a lot for any suggestions

yes everything in the canary seed is okay, I am not sure what it is called but I have seen it in a veggie fortified mix too that is specifically for budgies.

If the seed is Black & round, it’s probably what used to be called Rape & now has been changed to Canola…because of the connotations of the word “Rape”. It’s a member of the cabbage family, it’s pretty safe, it is very high in oil & if they ate large amounts it may be a problem, but I don’t think there’s much danger of that. Canaries love it…if it’s not round the only other seed that is black that I know is Niger, it’s a long thin seed, again it’s not a problem.

Yes, it's round. I thought it could be Rape seed, but I couldn't find a picture of the seeds on the internet - only the plants. The mix has quite a lot of this seed, but I still mix it with millet (which I buy from a breeder), so they won't be getting too much of the fatty seeds :grbud: . I know Rape seed plants are poisonous for rabbits, so I wanted to make sure it's okay for birds.

The round, black seed is rape or canola seed.  I buy mine in bulk and treat it myself.  It needs to be boiled for 10 minutes then dried or is poisonous to your bird.  My birds love it as if they are kids that get ice cream for the first time.
