Posted November 8, 200717 yr I have tried to do a search to find this out but it keeps coming up error??? In the FAQ section it says to put them on between 8 and 10 days but I'm sure I have seen it on here that it says between 5 and 6 days? Which is right? My first baby was hatched on Saturday night and I'm not sure when to put the leg ring on.
November 8, 200717 yr You have to write words with more then 4 letters - so try to search for rings or bands (without leg). I found some posts leg rings I think some people put the ring on at the age of 5 - 7 days Edited November 8, 200717 yr by Zebra

November 8, 200717 yr There is a lot of variation as to chicks age for ringing as show bird chicks are generally bigger and would be rung sooner than a pet type chick. I was taught by a seasoned breeder that if you extend the rear toe of the chick backwards and the toenail reaches the bend in the leg ( or knee or whatever we call it ) then it is ready to ring. Hope this helps.

Thanks Kaz, I tried that and 2 had the toenail that reached the bend in the leg so last night I put 2 rings on the eldest 2 after much wriggling and laughing at how awkward it felt and this morning I pulled the rings out of the box..(Laughing out loud) I guess I'll have another go tonight..haha

I went to legring some show type chicks today that yesterday were almost ready and today the chicks were huge !! Nearly didnt get the legrings on !! Had some baby oile ready to use though. Maybe its a good sign that those chicks are growing so big and so fast
November 10, 200717 yr I agree with Kaz, there’s lots of variation, some of the show type birds have such thick legs. I have put many on & tried them & thought they wont come off, but the next day they are gone & then the next day it was a real struggle to get them on.
November 10, 200717 yr The chicks legs do extend during the development period and it is not unusual to find that the day after putting on a snug ring that is has come off. I check every day to make sure all is okay especially the chicks. After getting the ring on, you must keep checking it encase a piece of wood shaving or seed doesn't get caught under neath it. This will cause major problems with blood circulation later on.
November 12, 200717 yr Author Yippee !!! Success at last, I put the leg rings on the eldest 2 yesterday afternoon, they were a tight fit and they are still on today. Now just have to wait until the other 3 are big enough....(Laughing out loud)
