How Long In The Sun?

Featured Replies

I have 2 budgies in the same cage that are kept predominately inside except on weekends when I put them outside for a few hours. How long is too long in the sun? Other than wild birds that tend to scare them is there anything else that I should look out for?

Thanks!

Hi, I would make sure they have somewhere to hide from the sun - I would put a cloth over part of the cage. But I don't know how hot it gets over there, so maybe wait for someone from Australia.

And watch out for some birds of pray who could try to attack them.

Hey,

I'd watch out for other domestic animals, such as cats.

They've caused a few problems for my canaries and zebra finches and they're aviary is in the backyard.

And in the summer, I'd only put them out in the mornings or early evening, otherwise it's just too hot.

As others have said never keep your birds unattended for any period of time it is too dangerous. Birds should not be in direct sun light so even having them next to the window with the screen is a great way for them to get fresh air.

Put a peg or some locking thing on the cage doors. In case something startles them. or has a go at them and the cage doors come open. Many a bird has been lost this way. Cage drops or a cat pushes the cage over. Crows, magpies and butcher birds will try and get small birds like budgies. I also had a budgie that opened his own doors and flew off.

Even a screen can filter out the beneficial things from the sun. I roll my guys out onto the back steps sometimes and when i do i peg the doors shut and stay out with them. Often i'll sit outside reading for an hour or two so i can supervise them. If you don't have that much time just 15-30 mins outside is still great for them. :)

Your right Bea :), I have read that but I think it is better then leaving them alone. Your suggest is perfect way to get them outside.

Your suggest is perfect way to get them outside.

And if i do say so myself, a perfect excuse for the owner to relax outside. :)

As everyone before has said, it is important to always keep an eye on your birds when they are outside. And of course make sure they have some shade. I'm sure they will love you for it!
