Posted November 7, 200717 yr I was wondering, do you think budgies can get some illness from mice? We have mice in our house and trying to get rid of them - but it's not very easy, they are very cheeky and don't want to get caught But we got new type of traps and still trying (first I got the kind of traps that don't hurt the mouse, but they don't work at all, so we have to kill them ) I could see the mice in the aviaries on the bottom eating the seeds from the floor. Do you think there is an illness that budgies could catch from mice? Thanks
November 7, 200717 yr Mice are certainly a problem Zebra, but as you have found something that’s not that easy to solve. Man has been fighting mice since the beginning of time & still the mouse is doing well. I don’t think you can think to kindly about them, as I have know some people that don’t want to kill them & trap them only to let them out somewhere else where they become a problem for others. I have found that if you have birds you will have mice & if you don’t keep on top of them, they will take over the place. I think they sure do spread disease & even can foul the birds feed with their dropping & urine, which can be toxic to birds. Don’t let them get you down too much, but continue to keep controlling them, as even if you do you wont get rid of them completely, but at least you will keep it bearable.

Thanks for reply Norm It sounds very depressing, but it's true. They are cheeky little things, we tried lots of things, but the best seem to be "normal" traps. Not for all mice, but most of them get caught. Some mice actually eat the cheese and the trap stays opened - no idea how they do it . But yesterday we got some new kind - it looks the same, but it should catch the mouse as soon as the mouse touches the trap, so we will see. I spoke to a breeder the other day and he has a mice problem too, so I guess as long as there are seeds, there will be mice too We've made feeding platforms in the new indoor aviaries, so I'm hoping the birds won't go to the bottom so much. And I'm going to sweap tho aviary floor as often as possible, so the mice don't have a reason to go there, I hope it helps We also have 2 dogs and they killed a couple of mice already, which is cool. We are thinking about getting a cat, but as I'm pregnant now, I'm worried about a cat (I've heard they can be dangerous for pregnant and small kids)
November 7, 200717 yr Your Jack Russell type dog should be good for catching mice if you encourage [him or her can’t remember]…sometimes Sunflower seeds or Pumpkin seeds can stay in traps better than cheese, or tie the bait with cotton, but it’s lots of work if you have to do it every day.

Yes she is very good for catching mice . That's very good idea with the cotton, thanks. I will try it.
November 7, 200717 yr When I had mice in my old aviary, fledged chicks got sick and I lost about half of them when the mice were at their worst...due to contaminated food sources. With your aviary, can you put some sheets tin around the bottom about 2 foot upwards so the mice cannot run through the mesh ? You would be surprised how small a gap a mouse can get through. Can they dig in and under ? We constantly use traps and bait boxes but seem to have got ahead of the mouse problem for the moment. But they love aviaries

It's very thick wooden floor and we will probably put another wooden flooring on it (the floating kind, you put in kitchen, etc. - not sure what it's called). I think they will be easier to clean. The mice get in through the bottom of the mesh. We wanted to put some wood around the bottom mesh, but I think they would climb on it anyway. I will look for some tin sheets, that sounds good. Or I'm thinking about some roofing to put on the sides - the see through kind of roofing - some of them could be slipery enough, so the mouse cannot climb up - I will see.
November 7, 200717 yr Author The see through roofing sheets would work....and fill any gaps I will try, thanks
November 12, 200717 yr Author Yesterday we caught 7 mice with the new traps we got . I'm so happy they work !!!
