How Old Is My Budgie...

It is a question we get a lot of, with good reason. Many people want to know if they have been sold a bird that isn't a chick.

The minimum age of a chick from a pet store should not be less than 8 weeks old. I say should not be but this is not always the case.

Some breeders sell chicks to the shops as soon as they can this is wrong.

It takes 28 days for a chick to start to begin feeding itself with the help of the parents. It is around this time that they start to come out of the nest box. But still need the parents to feed them. After 35 days they should be on their way to looking after themselves. I take the chicks from their parents at 42 days and place them in the nursary with other chicks.

You will see the older ones feeding the younger ones from time to time. During this time there is some weight loss.

I would give them until they are 54 days old to become self reliant before selling them.

My chicks actually stay in the nursery until they are 90 days old and then move to the Junior flight.

If you buy from a pet store, they should be about 8 to 10 weeks old, if not you might need to get them a lot of extra attention.

Just goes to show how much YOU TWO KNOW!!

You count the feathers!! They start with 358 and they grow a new one every month!

Feathers.

ps.. It is easiest if you remove the feathers as you count them, or you might have to start again

(and PUL-LEASE no one take this seriously)

It's pretty sad that I felt the need to add the qualification to the bottom of that post. I just had the awful thought that someone may actually believe me!:D
