Posted October 28, 200717 yr This budgie flew into our yard about 6 weeks ago, he was very fluffed up with no tail feathers and couldn't fly very well but seemed tame. We put up flyers all over town and put an add in our local paper and newsletter but no-one came forward, so we've decided that he is ours now. I put him in the avairy this afternoon and he is flying wonderful with the other birds, still got no tail feathers. Could someone tell me what his color would be, he is a very pretty green - I would say a mint green.
October 28, 200717 yr A stunning budgie :bluebudgie: He is a Yellowface skyblue type 2 opaline spangle and a very pretty one at that ....lovely :bluebudgie:
October 28, 200717 yr Will his tail feathers grow back eventually? Most likely...he has all his others. Might have lost them through a moult or through his adventure :bluebudgie:
October 28, 200717 yr He looks to have a bit of size about him.I would say he is of a show standard breeding.I guess he did`nt have a ring on.So you wont know his age.I would pair him up with a good hen & see how he goes. :bluebudgie:
October 28, 200717 yr he is a beautiful boy, his tail feathers as Kaz said will come back probably when he has his next couple molts so no worries. Something probably tried to grab him. We caught a cockatiel in my younger days and she had no tail feathers and they came in beautiful after a couple molts.
October 28, 200717 yr Beautiful bird I have some very much like him, I like the colour lots. Normally if the feathers have been pulled out completely they will grow back in about two or three weeks, but if the feathers have been broken off & still have the end left in, it will take till the next moult.

October 31, 200717 yr No,I would pair him to a green.I never pair 2 of the same colour together if I can help it. Also I would`nt pair him back to a opline hen.A good normal green, split for blue would be okay. :Sorry Kaz

October 31, 200717 yr Denise,Pick the best of the greens or greygreen would do.But not opline,on second thoughts I would`nt use cinnomon either.

October 31, 200717 yr I’m sorry I disagree with Macka, that bird is a Yellow faced Blue bird, if you mate it with a Green the YF will be masked. Unless the Green bird is split for Blue you will not get any birds of the same mutation. I would mate it to a Blue series bird, then you should get about 50% YF & 50% Spangle…I wouldn’t mate it to another Spangle unless you like pure white DF Spangles. Seeing it’s Opaline you will get Opaline females with whatever you mate it with, if you mated it to an Opaline hen you will get more birds that are like him, if that’s what you are after.
November 1, 200717 yr Norn, Have you read the Joe Mannes,Budgie Bible. He never mates 2 of the same colour together. Norm Iam not thinking pet breeding.Iam breeding for show & would`nt mate him to a blue & not to a opline, any spangles would be down on wing markings. This is only my opinion,I know 95% of the ppl on this forum are pet breeders & put any 2 budgies together & hope for chicks. But would`nt it be good if they breed to try & improve there lot. : Spoken by Macka, for the better breeding of Budgies. :(Laughing out loud): :
November 1, 200717 yr [Feathers rolls up fisticuffs] say, where do I enrol for this debate? Feathers.
November 1, 200717 yr i dont think it matters on what colour you put with him, denise, because you dont know what colours he would have in his blood
November 1, 200717 yr Author Well he has decided himself by pairing up with a cinnamon opaline violet, they have been inseperable for the last 2 days and as we are only breeding to increase our own flock I thought I would put them together in a breeding cage. There has already been a lot of activity between them and she has been in and out of the nest box all afternoon. So fingers crossed.
November 1, 200717 yr No Macka I haven’t read Mannes Budgie bible, in fact I haven’t heard of it, is it on the web? I must do a search. I know he is considered one of the best breeders. In fact I was told the other day one of the birds I bought is from his line. I can’t remember where I read it but I read that you should as much as possible keep YF out of Greens otherwise it is masked & later can emerge & mess up your matings. I always mate to improve the birds I breed, as whatever you are doing, show or otherwise, I think that should be the aim of all of us. I guess the problem is that there are as many ideas as there are breeders, of what is the right thing to do. Mating to “difference” often brings out vigour, but in breeding quality birds for exhibition, I thought one of the ideas was to keep the “Heinz” variety out of lines. Anyway in Denise’s case I thought what she wanted to breed was some similar birds to the one she found. Feathers I thought you would know that you can put your bit in anytime, without waiting to be invited, I thought that was one of the aims of this forum…(Laughing out loud).
