I had two dominant pieds breeding. They hatched the first chick out and let it die unfed. Second and third chick went unfed so I fed them and then took a chance and fostered to a hen that was midway through her own egglaying.

The hen and her boy have successfully fed and raised the babies of the pied couple. Chicks are just in pin feathers now.

Their pin feathers show yellow and they are definitely dominant pieds. Does anyone know what they will look like ?

Not sure on the bub specifically though... still trying to learn about how to tell colors in babies. What does the yellow pin feathers mean in a bub? And how can you tell they are pied already?

Your chance of some YF Greys should be high Kaz...did you try the parents with a larger young one to see if they would feed it? I had the same problem, but after giving them a larger youngster they started feeding the small ones...hopefully just learning, not some genetical problem. I have some Dom Pieds that just look like your Mum.

Yes...I tried everything with this pair. I think the Mum was just too inexperienced and "daft" After the first chick died and the next ones went unfed, I fed the chicks and put them back under her for a few days but she still didnt "get it" so they were fostered. I nearly considered rehoming the mother, but she is pretty and I will try her again with a Dad that I know feeds his babies so she learns by it.

The Website www.budgieplace.com has pictures of double factor dominant pieds in blue and green series they look similar to Harliquens with a lot of ground colour and little dark markings , the site has pictures of most varieties as well as some of the rarer ones .

What stunning birds Kaz....and what a good foster mum.....can't wait to see them feather up...

Look tiny up against these two pieds, but it has been fed, so I will watch closely and if it looks like its in trouble I will move the little one to another nest.

YES ......but CUSTARD was also cinnamon and these ones arent. Both look to be hens.

The foster mother of these two babies began to pluck them. So I first tried the see through nestbox lid and put a block of wood in the nestbox for her to chew on as distraction. BUT she continued. So I put the babies in an open container on the floor of the breeding cabinet, where she refused to feed them and still plucked them some more. So she has been removed and the Dad is in their with them. So far, I haven't seen him feed the babies so I am topping them up with occasional crop feeds until he works it out. I cannot foster them to any other nests as they are too big and all my other breeding pairs have newborns. I will get some photos.
