Hi All

Well I had been doing the same thing every day with Zeus..Sitting at his cage, talking to him etc. & he'd happily let me scratch him around the Head & Cheeks.. All was going along GREAT.. But then a few days ago he suddenly got scared of me & I HAD NOT done anything different :budgiedance:. I can put my hand in the cage & he won't go Overly nuts, but he stands back screaching at me & won't let me touch him anymore. When I go to touch him he cowers back in the corner. he is in my bedroom as that's the only place I can keep him away from my Cats & my other birds...They are in a seperate room & I wanted him away from them otherwise whenever I went over to his cage he'd look at them & not pay attention to what I was doing. As far as I know nothing happend to make him scared I keep the door closed so the cats can not get in there..

What can I do to get him to trust me again? & Willl he? he was doing so well & now this :(.

While you were with him something may have frightened him. I would move the location of his cage because whenever you change the enviroment where the bad situation happened it helps the animal move forward with trust. Also if he is a big millet fan holding a piece up to the side of the cage where he can come over and nibble is wonderful or hold it for him with your hand in the cage.

He will trust you again don't worry but again working in a different location is going to be key where you are taking him out of his comfortable enviroment where he needs the sense to protect himself and put him back into a situation where he needs to rely on you for protection.

Hi Earth Angel,

There could be a couple of reasons for the reaction that you got. He could be going through a hormonal patch (most male juveniles do) or he could be starting to moult and scratching the pin feathers could hurt unless you are very careful.

As he has happily trusted you before keep on spending time with him daily and put your hand in the cage and perhaps leave it resting on a perch for a while so that he re-learns that your hand is not a threat. It may time time, but he should come around.

Feathers.

:) Just like children, he may be going through the equivalent of the "terrible twos". Guess patience is a virtue at this stage............... :)
