I was mostly wondering what colour mutation Gemma is. Stormy is a grey and they have just had their first baby. Any guesses on the colour of their babies would be interesting too, but mostly I want to know Gemma's colour. Libby did tell me, but I forgot to write it down (Laughing out loud)

Baby looked well when I got home from work last night and I had a closer look this morning, though mum dived back in the box as soon as I went into the aviary, being all protective. He has a nice full crop. Daddy is being attentive and feeding too, so all looks well there Gemma has wanted to have babies since we first got her, but took some time finding a partner for some reason. Odd couple, Stormy is a total character and nutter

Your question about expcted colours is hard to answer without knowing more about the parents ie is the green pied hen split for blue , is the grey cock a double factor grey ? saying that you can expect 50% pieds and 50% normals probably grey green in colour and pedpending on parents breeding some grey or blue birds , pied babies are easy to spot early as they appear splotchy a few days after hatching as for colours you need to wait for pin feathers to appear to see . I love to lottery of breeding and seeing what comes out with observation over time it becomes easier to identify what you have , in the end colour is not that important to you , healthy babies takes precidence , good luck & enjoy the ride .

Thank you for your input Bubbles. I agree with you that in the end, its a healthy baby that is important not the colour. I have no idea about the parents of these two, so as you said, I will just have to enjoy the ride and wait and see I guess. It will be interesting! :budgiedance:

is gemma's wings mostly clear?? from the front maybe a df dom pied? need to see the wings though to tell for sure. Looks much like my double factor dom pied only yellow variety.

Double factor dominant pied is quite likely and will be answered shortly if all the babies turn out to be pied. As to colours - greens and grey-greens split blue (grays and blue possible only if she is split blue)

Well her baby is looking very healthy, only one has hatched so far, but it is growing before my eyes and always has a nice full crop when I check in. I am really looking forward to the colouring up of her baby, although I am not sure yet if I will be able to share as my son borrow my digital camera over the weekend and it doesnt seem to be working right now. I have some batteries on recharge and hope that is the problem :mellow:

Here is Gemma and Stormy's first baby, just over a week old I dont think the other eggs are going to hatch but thats okay I couldnt get a decent shot of its face and eyes, but it's eyes are open and it is looking very healthy.

looking great, i would start to add some shavings in the nest box to help keep it and the chicks feet clean.

I havent put shavings in as she only has the one and seems to be keeping things pretty clean. Should I put shavings in even if there is just one baby?

It’s always a good idea to keep plenty of nesting material, either wood shavings, sawdust etc, as it helps absorb the droppings & keeps the nest dry & gives the chick something to hold on to with it’s feet to prevent splayed legs. Even if the hen throws it out, it’s best to add it when the first chick hatches & then normally they wont throw it out so much.

Will do. I have added it to clutches of more than one, but will do it for all new hatches. Thanks
